Family Engagement Survey is Live!

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the Family Engagement Survey  to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school community. The survey is open until April 3rd. It is available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Korean, Farsi, Urdu, and Vietnamese. All responses will be confidential.

With parent/caregiver input, the school division will be better suited to develop policies and practices that incorporate their ideas, and help focus everyone on their role in improving student achievement.

Survey results will be used to develop a plan to improve family and school partnerships throughout the division.

For more information, please watch this short video from Superintendent Brabrand and visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage. An email link was sent on March 13th, however is also available here: Family Engagement Survey Link. If you need a paper copy of the survey, please reach out to our front office and we can provide one for you.  Please find translated information below.

Stenwood Counselors’ Parent Workshop Series: SEL Screener Session

All parents are welcome to attend the Virtual Parent Workshop on Zoom with Stenwood School counselors, Ms. Hapangama and Ms. Berick.  This month’s special session will also include additional members from our mental health team, including our school psychologist, Ms. Barnes, and our school social worker, Ms. Appleton.

The next session will take place on Friday, March 25th from 2:10-2:40 PM. You can access the session here:

https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/j/97633322385

The Zoom will be recorded and available to view later for those that cannot attend live. The topic for this month will be: “Understanding the SEL Screener”. If you would like an overview of the SEL screener prior to the session, please check out the FCPS SEL Screener webpage.  You can access last month’s recording on Schoology on the All Parents page under materials.

These Parent Workshops will take place regularly on the last Friday of each month till the end of the school year on zoom from 2:10-2:40, unless otherwise specified. We hope to see you there!

Kilmer MS Production of Matilda Jr.

Kilmer Middle School’s Drama Department is excited to announce their performance of Matilda JR!

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

General admission performances are Friday, March 18th (7pm), Saturday, March 19th (2pm & 7pm), Friday, March 25th (7pm) and Saturday, March 26th (2pm & 7pm)! Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at www.kmsdrama.org (starting March 7th) or at all lunches at Kilmer Middle School the week of March 7th.  TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD AT THE DOOR.

Understanding ESSER III Funding’s Impact on Student Success

Last fall, FCPS received $188.6 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding. These funds have helped us safely reopen our schools and to keep them open. We have also been able to address the impacts of COVID-19 on students. If you are not familiar with ESSER III, here are a few things you should know about how it impacts student success.  ESSER III focus areas include:

  • Prevention and mitigation strategies to help keep schools open and safe for students and staff.
  • Academic intervention services, such as our hourly intervention teachers who provide academic support during the school day, before and after-school intervention, and the summer learning programs.
  • Professional development to ensure our schools are welcoming and culturally responsive to all students and families.
  • Multilingual engagement to ensure information is accessible to all families.
  • Additional support for students’ social emotional needs.

There will be two opportunities for you to tell us how well FCPS is meeting ESSER III requirements around a safe return to in-person instruction and continuity of learning. Please stay tuned for details! Visit the ESSER III webpage for more information.

It is already that time of year to start planning for next year.  Our Kindergarten registration for rising kindergarteners for the 2022-23 school year is now open.  Please use the online portal to submit your initial information and Mrs. Hunt will follow up with you.

K Reg

If you have a child at home who will be five by September 30th, please start your registration now.  If you have any neighbors with little ones, please send this information to them as well.

*REMINDER* We hosted an in person orientation on Thursday, March 3rd at 2:30 in the cafeteria and virtually on Friday, March 4th.  If you were unable to attend either session, the recording from our virtual session is now posted to the Stenwood website.

Positivity Project: Humor

PP

This week, we are focusing on Humor. You like to laugh and bring smiles to other people.

"A sense of humor is a major defense against minor troubles.”

                                                          ~Mignon McLaughlin

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • How does humor affect relationships? How does it connect people?
  • How can you incorporate more humor into your everyday life?
  • Have you ever been in a situation where you just couldn’t stop laughing? What happened?

Available Covid Vaccine Locations

covid testing sites

Starting back up next week, students may obtain COVID-19 diagnostic testing at six drive-through sites in Fairfax County. Diagnostic testing is provided for anyone who has symptoms or is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing helps us reduce the virus’ spread and keep our schools safe places for all students to learn. I encourage you to utilize our new diagnostic testing services as needed.

Appointments are not required for diagnostic testing but families must register in the secure online portal. When you register and provide consent for your child to be tested, they will also be added toStenwood’s screening testing pool. If you do not wish for them to be part of the weekly screening testing pool, simply log back into the online portal after your child’s test is complete and withdraw consent.

More information about diagnostic and screening testing, including site locations and schedules, is available on our website
