Spring Hill ES Panther Press

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Families,

We are quickly approaching the end of the 3rd quarter. The time has flown. Next Thursday is the end of the 3rd quarter and a two-hour early release day in FCPS. Spring Hill's dismissal will be at 1:35 PM on Thursday. There is no school for students on Friday, April 1 for a teacher workday.

     Have a wonderful weekend!

Spring has Sprung and the Allergy Season is Upon Us!

allergy

As we enter the spring season, pollen counts are high. Many staff and students are experiencing watery eyes and stuffy noses. If your child is a sufferer of seasonal allergies, please let our clinic staff know so that we can update this information on our school's medical flag list.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jairica Johnson, RN, BSN CPN, School Public Health Nurse II, @ jjohnson3@fcps.edu,

Get Caught Reading!

Spring Hill wants to catch students reading over Spring Break!

We want students to show us just how much they love to read by finding a creative place to read over Spring Break and having someone snap a picture.

Students will fill out the front of this form, glue their picture to it, and return it to school. All pictures will be posted for viewing around the school. All students who return this form by April 15th will receive a special prize!

Please direct any questions to Reading Teacher, Janis Lefcourt, or Librarian, Lindsey DeVylder.

PickUp Patrol

We are piloting a new home to school communication dismissal system this spring called Pickup Patrol. The system will allow for a one-stop shop for communication between the teacher and parent regarding changes to a student's dismissal. Click here to learn more about this system and learn how to register.

Please assist us with the setup of the system by filling out this questionnaire - SPRING HILL'S DISMISSALS . The form will ask you to tell us how your children are regularly dismissed from school each day. (For example Annie usually rides the bus M-F, or Jaime is a Walker on MTW and goes to aftercare on ThF.) This will help us to make the dismissal process as smooth as possible for you and your student(s).

  • Submit one form for each student
  • Submit information by: Friday, April 1st

If you have any questions, please reach out to Kate Allen, School-Based Technology Specialist.

Testing Updates

Grades K-6

Spring SEL screener testing window (Grades K-6) will open on April 12th-May 6th. Click here for the notification of testing letter.

VDOE and FCPS require schools to deliver screening and progress monitoring assessments multiple times per year to evaluate school readiness, measure student growth, and inform student intervention/supports. A summary of spring expectations is provided here by grade range.

Kindergarten

The VKRP assesses literacy, mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills for students in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. The VKRP will be given between April 12th-May 20th.
  • Teachers assess students using the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) for VKRP literacy. Teachers interview students using the Early Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS) for VKRP mathematics. Positivity Project

Week of March 28-March 31- Humor

What does Humor mean? One likes to laugh and bring smiles to other people. Humor is a sense of playfulness and lightness. It is a way of looking at and describing the world that brings laughter to people. A person with the strength of humor is skilled at seeing the funny side of things, bringing smiles and laughter to others, and identifying and communicating the absurdities in life.

Why does it matter? For individuals, humor has important health benefits, both mental and physical. Humor stretches the mind to look at things from different perspectives, keeping people mentally agile and alert. Humor plays an important role in helping groups of people rise above difficult circumstances and boost morale. It removes us from our present difficulties by easing tension and making life more fun.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Levels II-III

Students can be screened for school-based (level II-III) AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, local schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

School-Based Services in Elementary School

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:

  • Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
  • A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

Tier 1 Access to AAP Curriculum and Strategies, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

  • All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
  • Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Level I services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

  • Providing different assignments and resources using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.
  • Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness.

Level II Services are re-evaluated each year and may change from year to year.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

  • Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
  • Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Level III services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening Timeline for Level IV

Screening for level IV AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for Level IV services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January. Fall referrals are due in early October.
  • Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student. The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, annually.

For more information, please visit the AAP website here.

Every fall we hold AAP Parent/Guardian Information Sessions to provide families with information regarding Levels of Services and the Screening Process.  Look for information regarding fall sessions when we return to school next year.

If you have questions, please reach out to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART), Danni James @ dfjames@fcps.edu

A Message from PTO

Call for PTO Appropriations Requests

Thanks to a successful year of fundraising and the generosity of our community, the PTO is putting out a call for appropriations requests. Spring Hill families and faculty are eligible to submit requests and ideas of how funds should be appropriated back to our school.

In the past, appropriations have been issued for items such as new laptops, orchestra instruments, classroom rugs, interactive projectors, leveled text books, playground equipment, math manipulatives, and teacher planning guides, to name a few. Requests for this round of funding are due by April 10th.

If you have an idea you'd like to submit for consideration by our Appropriations Committee, or want to learn more about the appropriations process, please visit the Appropriations page of our PTO website or email our PTO Treasurer at springhillptotreasurer@gmail.com.

Farewell, Fun Fair!

Thank you to all of the families who came out on Saturday to enjoy a day of games, prizes, candy treats and lots of FUN! We hope you won some fabulous prizes and made great new memories with friends.

To the many volunteers who helped - families, school staff and administration, students - we couldn't have done it without you. We hope it was a great experience and that we'll see you again at future PTO events.
