Glasgow Community Gazette - March 20

Powell

Greetings!

This weekend was spent taking my classes with the AASA/Howard University Urban Superintendent Program, studying for church and hanging out with my mother in law. I hope everyone had a peaceful weekend.

Don't forget to join the PTA meeting TUESDAY, MARCH 22 at 7pm on Zoom. Register in advance for this webinar:  https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UwOFLHRDRoyQYOgzMVn6fw. The topic of the meeting will be information about Hoop It Up Night and the Glasgow Games. Be sure to look at the PTA section below for more updates.

On Friday, CBS news came to film Julie Kouril and her History 6 students in 7th period. The segment will be on CBS news highlighting gender bias in the curriculum for Women's History month.   Julie was asked to pilot W.E.A.R. curriculum materials created by a student group from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.  This group of young advocates creates teaching materials to promote female representation across all content areas.  CBS will be airing the story on March 29th!  Awesome work Julie Kouril!  To learn more about this organization and the resources visit https://www.w-e-a-r.org/

Also, all FCPS students will have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost. Students can connect online any time, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing students’ strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology.

All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between a student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.

Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request. Watch for an email soon that will include the online tutoring services notice and opt-out information. Additionally, a hard copy form will be sent home with every student.

For additional information, visit our online tutoring services website. As always, please contact us if you have any questions. As always, please let our team know how we can support your family.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

YEARBOOK PICTURES NEEDED:  Attention Glasgow Community.  The Yearbook crew could really use your help.  We are in desperate need of photos for the yearbook.  It is our goal to represent EVERY single student from Glasgow in our book, The Pride.  We are lacking a great number of people and student populations.  We would absolutely love more candid pictures, of students having fun and being themselves.  Examples of this could be sporting events, competitions, friends playing in the back yard or at a get together.   If you can snag some pictures of your student AND their friends without masks,  that is even better.  Please take some pictures of your students and submit them using this form.  Please be sure to include your email, names of students, and what is happening in the pictures to ensure accuracy.  Thank you so very much for your help.   If you have any questions, please email our yearbook adviser,  Rushel Grillo: rngrillo1@fcps.edu.  Thank you.

The PTA is seeking 1 more volunteer to serve on the Nominating Committee to help find candidates to serve on the PTA Board for next school year. Your responsibilities would be to: 1) Coordinate with the current PTA Board members to find candidates to run for next year's officer positions; 2) Be available to provide descriptions of the various Board positions to potential candidates (this information will be provided to you); and 3) Present the nominees for Board positions at the April 26, PTA meeting. Your responsibilities will be over after this meeting.

Elections for PTA Board positions will be held on May 31, 2022. As the terms are for 1 year, we will be seeking candidates for all positions. We welcome any and all questions about what the positions entail and look forward to your participation for next school year.

Join us in-person at Glasgow on Monday, April 11 at 6pm for a listening session with school board member Dr. Ricardy Anderson.
