Dear Fairhill Families:

It’s our big garden weekend!  Our Fairhill Garden Clean-Up Day is this Saturday from 10AM-2PM. With that in mind, we will start our day with donuts and coffee and move forward to our tree planting, mulch spreading and grounds clean up. There will be a job for everyone, young and old.  Please see below under News from Fairhill PTA News for more information.

The weather looks clear (knock on wood!) and we hope this event has great participation to bring us all back together for a safe community day as we transition back to normal with our lives.

See you this weekend.

Join the PTA!

As we head back to school in person, it is the perfect time to bring our Fairhill community back together.  One of the best ways to feel connected to our teachers, staff and families is to join the PTA.  You can become a member by accessing this link

Dear Fairhill Families,

We are partnering with the Urban Forest Management and Storm water Planning departments of Fairfax County Government and FCPS to revitalize the grounds around Fairhill.  This project was kicked off a few years ago and we are excited to take the next step. We need your help to make this a success!

When:  Saturday, March 26, 10am - 2pm

(The event will occur if there is a light rain.  If the forecast calls for heavy rain, we will reschedule).

What:  We have several volunteer opportunities for the entire family for the garden clean up community event.

Rain Garden:  Our rain garden was put on hold during covid but we are ready to complete the project. Our rain garden is part Fairfax County's Revitalize, Restore, Replant initiative.  It will help clean rain water run off before it enters the watershed and provide a habitat for many native pollinators and valuable bugs, among other benefits.  We encourage you to watch this short video to learn more about the value of our rain garden.  It may not always look pretty, but it serves a very important role in our ecosystem.  In exciting news, we already found several praying mantis egg cases (they eat mosquitos, yahoo!).

  1.  Plant new plants donated by the Watershed Education and Outreach team.
  2.  Remove the old temporary fence.
  3.  Install a new protective fence.

Assist with Tree Planting:  The Urban Forest Management Department plans to kick off their program at Fairhill with 8 trees that will be planted in the playground area.  Families are encouraged to assist with planting the trees and applying mulch.

Spread Mulch:  We have a landscaping crew coming to clean out and edge the flowerbeds around the school.  Families may be asked to help distribute the mulch in the flowerbeds.

Clean Up:  As you work your way around the school, please help us clean up the playground by picking up trash, used masks and abandoned recess toys.

Steel toed boots:  We are in need of a parent with steel toed boots to operate the auger in the rain garden.  If you have steel toed boots and are willing to work on the rain garden project, please contact president@fairhillpta.org.

We are looking forward seeing you at this community event.  In order to adequately prepare, we are asking for a head-count for those interested.  Signing up does not obligate you to a particular role or time.  We just need an idea of how many families will show up to our event.  To access the signup genius, click here.

Refreshments will be served.

Note to parents:  There will be a landscaping crew as well as gardening tools found throughout the playground during this event.  Please keep an eye on your children.  We don't want anyone to get hurt.

PTA directory

Fairhill Family Directory

The PTA is excited to launch our digital school directory.  Those of you who have been at Fairhill for a few years may remember the A to Z Connect Directory.  It is a great way to stay in touch with other Fairhill families and plan birthday parties and playdates.

The directory can be accessed from the Membership Toolkit Mobile App or from a browser.

The directory is available to all families who did not opt out.

Logging In and Creating an Account

Before you can use the directory, you need to set up your account. To set up your account, you must go through a browser.  Once the account is established, you can use the mobile app for your searches.  The URL for the Fairhill A to Z directory can be found HERE

  • Click the “Register/Login” button on your home page.
  • Use the email address that you have on file with the Fairhill office and select a password.
  • Watch for an email that will ask you to verify your email address.
  • Once you have verified your email address, you need to finish setting up your contact information for the database. Complete the parent & student forms and the directory & publish preferences.

Please note, your email address is the only information that is required to access the directory.  You do not need to provide your home address or phone number.  When you are asked to verify your account information, you are welcome to add your address and/or phone number and can select to have this information displayed through the publish preferences page.  The default is for only your email address to be displayed.

Opportunities to contribute to the Fairhill Community PTA

Are you interested in working with the PTA but don't know how to begin?  As we head into the spring, the PTA has several fun ways for parents to get involved supporting our school and community.

Website Coordinator

We are in need of a parent who can keep our PTA website up to date.  Experience with WordPress would be helpful.

Staff Appreciation Week

Staff Appreciation Week is the first week of May and we are in need of volunteers to join our committee.  The committee will come up with ideas for showering the staff with appreciation during the week (for example lunches, surprises in staff mailboxes, chocolate fountain in the staff lounge, etc), create signup genius pages for donations and volunteers (if needed) and help ensure that the staff feel our appreciation.  We are so fortunate to have such an amazing group of people take care of our kids each day.  If you would like to help show them our gratitude, please join this committee.

Family Fun Day

We haven't been able to host our family fun day in 2 years due to covid so we are very excited to bring back the tradition!  In June, the PTA will host a family fun day.  This is an outdoor (weather permitting) carnival type event for the Fairhill community.  We usually have food trucks, bouncy/inflatable games, a staff dunk tank, sports drills with Falls Church High School and more.  The committee will design the event (new ideas are welcome!), book food trucks and take shifts managing the event.  The Family Fun Day is a wonderful community building experience to wrap up the school year. Please consider donating your time and ideas to this celebration!

If any or all of these volunteer opportunities appeal to you, please contact president@fairhillpta.org.

Free Online Tutoring Services for All Students Coming Soon!

All FCPS students will soon have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost. Funds to support Tutor.com for school year 2022-23 and 2023-24 will come from an ESSER III Unfinished Learning Grant.

Students can connect online any time, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing student’s strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology.

All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between a student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.

Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request. All FCPS families will soon receive an email including an online tutoring services notice and opt-out information. Additionally, a hard copy form will be sent home with every student.

For additional information, visit our online tutoring services website.
