Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

Thank you once again to our amazing PTA for hosting our annual Bingo Night virtually.  It was so fun to see the joy and excitement of everyone as they called bingo!  As the weather gets warmer in the afternoons, our Lost and Found is growing.  Our amazing Photo Bees, with the help of Mrs. Krum, have digitally photographed the collection.  Here is a Lost and Found Video Slideshow of the items.  If you see any items that belong to your family, please reach out to our Family Liaison, Maria Agha magha@fcps.edu with the item number(s) of the items you are missing and she will help return them to your family.

We are excited to share a new resource that will soon be available to all Stenwood students to support learning. All FCPS students will have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost.  With this service, students can connect online any time, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing students’ strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology.  For more information, see the FCPS website.

Family Engagement Survey is Live!

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the Family Engagement Survey  to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school community. The survey is open until April 3rd. It is available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Korean, Farsi, Urdu, and Vietnamese. All responses will be confidential.

With parent/caregiver input, the school division will be better suited to develop policies and practices that incorporate their ideas, and help focus everyone on their role in improving student achievement.

Survey results will be used to develop a plan to improve family and school partnerships throughout the division.

For more information, please watch this short video from Superintendent Brabrand and visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage. An email link was sent on March 13th, however is also available here: Family Engagement Survey Link. If you need a paper copy of the survey, please reach out to our front office and we can provide one for you.  Please find translated information below.

Stenwood Counselors’ Parent Workshop Series: SEL Screener Session

All parents are welcome to attend the Virtual Parent Workshop on Zoom with Stenwood School counselors, Ms. Hapangama and Ms. Berick.  This month’s special session will also include additional members from our mental health team, including our school psychologist, Ms. Barnes, and our school social worker, Ms. Appleton.

The next session will take place on Friday, March 25th from 2:10-2:40 PM. If you have general questions about the screener, please submit them via THIS FORM ahead of time so we can do our best to address them in the presentation.  If you have specific questions about your child's results, you may submit those as well and a member of our team will follow up with directly. The Zoom will be recorded and available to view later for those that cannot attend live. The topic for this month will be: “Understanding the SEL Screener”. If you would like an overview of the SEL screener prior to the session, please check out the FCPS SEL Screener webpage.  You can access last month’s recording on Schoology on the All Parents page under materials.

These Parent Workshops will take place regularly on the last Friday of each month till the end of the school year on zoom from 2:10-2:40, unless otherwise specified. We hope to see you there!

Kilmer MS Production of Matilda Jr.

Kilmer Middle School’s Drama Department is excited to announce their performance of Matilda JR!

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

General admission performances are Friday, March 18th (7pm), Saturday, March 19th (2pm & 7pm), Friday, March 25th (7pm) and Saturday, March 26th (2pm & 7pm)! Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at www.kmsdrama.org (starting March 7th) or at all lunches at Kilmer Middle School the week of March 7th.  TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD AT THE DOOR.

Understanding ESSER III Funding’s Impact on Student Success

Last fall, FCPS received $188.6 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding. These funds have helped us safely reopen our schools and to keep them open. We have also been able to address the impacts of COVID-19 on students. If you are not familiar with ESSER III, here are a few things you should know about how it impacts student success.  ESSER III focus areas include:

  • Prevention and mitigation strategies to help keep schools open and safe for students and staff.
  • Academic intervention services, such as our hourly intervention teachers who provide academic support during the school day, before and after-school intervention, and the summer learning programs.
  • Professional development to ensure our schools are welcoming and culturally responsive to all students and families.
  • Multilingual engagement to ensure information is accessible to all families.
  • Additional support for students’ social emotional needs.

There will be two opportunities for you to tell us how well FCPS is meeting ESSER III requirements around a safe return to in-person instruction and continuity of learning. Please stay tuned for details! Visit the ESSER III webpage for more information.

Positivity Project: Wildcard Week

PP

This week, teachers are going back and hitting lessons they may have missed or character strengths they feel their students really enjoyed discussing. Over the last six weeks, we have learned about Integrity, Love, Humility, Enthusiasm, Social Intelligence, and Love of Learning. The important thing to remember is that everyone has ALL 24 strengths within them, but some shine through more than others.

"Character, not circumstance, makes the person.”

                                                          ~Booker T. Washington

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • When you think of character, what comes to mind?
  • Do you think character is just ONE thing, or multiple things?
  • Why do we need to continue educating ourselves about character?
