March 18, 2022

Dear Fairfax Family,

What a beautiful sunny day! Hopefully, the cold weather is behind us for good.

Please plan to join us this evening at 7:00 PM for our 2022 Cultural Celebration in the auditorium. Our students have been preparing for weeks for this fantastic celebration of the many cultures represented at FHS. The celebration includes dances representing different cultures, an awesome jazz band, an accomplished pianist, drum shows and an international fashion show. Be prepared to be impressed! A big thank you to ESOL teacher, Mrs. Sara Chae for leading and organizing this incredible event along with many FHS staff members.

Congratulations to Daniel J. Miller, FHS English Teacher, who was recognized at a ceremony during the March 10th meeting of the FCPS School Board for renewing his status as a National Board Certified Teacher. National Board Certification is the most respected professional certification available in education. It requires an intense, self-reflective process focused on the philosophy, craft, and practice of teaching. We are so proud of Mr. Miller and the enormous impact he has had on our school and community.

Wishing you a safe and restful weekend!

Best Regards,

Test to Stay

Test to Stay Program Starting March 14

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has been working closely with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to implement a Test to Stay strategy in our local school divisions. Test to Stay is an extra layer of prevention combined with our current layered prevention strategies. All testing will be voluntary and only students with a signed consent form on file will be tested. Test kits are provided free of charge.

Test to Stay (TTS) is a practice that allows unvaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated students identified as close contacts in a confirmed COVID-19 outbreak (by the Fairfax County Health Department), to remain in school.

Information and the consent form were emailed to families last week. You can also find everything you need on our website at:

https://fairfaxhs.fcps.edu/resources/test-to-stay

Class Fees

If your student owes a class fee you received an email on Monday March 14th with the details. Each fee that is owed will generate an email, so you may have receive multiple emails. Online Tutoring for Students - Coming Soon!

Online Tutoring

All FCPS students will soon have unlimited access to safe online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Funds to support Tutor.com for school year 2022-23 and 2023-24 will come from an ESSER III Unfinished Learning Grant.

Students can connect online any time, any place, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring services are available before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends. Tutoring will be accessed online through a link in Schoology. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice and/or text chat.

All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.

Student participation is optional and parents/guardians can opt their student(s) out of accessing the services. More information is available on the online tutoring services website. View this YouTube video for more information.
