Message from the Principal

Dr Grove

March 14th, 2022

Dear Wolftrap Families,

It looks like we are in for a beautiful week, after a roller coaster of weather on Saturday! March is truly a transitional time, both with our seasons and with our school year. If you have not had an opportunity to volunteer to monitor our tent outside, please consider signing up through the PTA. It is a great time to connect with our students in the springtime!

VISION AND MISSION FEEDBACK: As we embark on the important task of crafting an updated mission and vision statement to guide Wolftrap Elementary into the future, we continue talking to students about the kind of school they would like to attend. At the March 11th PTA meeting, I gave a short presentation about our work here at Wolftrap. It is important to have parent voices in the room, as our staff begins to discuss the data we have collected. Please consider giving your feedback, using this Google form.  https://forms.gle/bg32CEXuNmW39wXp8

BE ON THE LOOKOUT: PRINCIPAL EVALUATION FEEDBACK FORM: This spring all Wolftrap parents/guardians will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism. Understanding that this has been another unusual year, the impacts of COVID-19 will be taken into consideration when reviewing the feedback. The questionnaire will be collected online between March 7 and March 18. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter!

ESSER: Last fall, FCPS received $188.8 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools, and address the impacts of COVID-19 on students. For information on the ESSER III grant, please visit the FCPS website.

I have been highlighting how we are using funds at Wolftrap in each Connection newsletter. Last newsletter, I mentioned that we are welcoming a therapy dog to Wolftrap in the coming weeks. We will be starting yoga as well! As part of our wellness initiatives, these programs will support the whole child, which is important in this time. ESSER funds also support our staff as we address learning loss through our academic supports, such as our targeted work with small groups during the school day and additional work with groups in Language Arts and Math after the school day. For more details, please see our plan posted on our Wolftrap website.

May I also encourage you to follow us on our official Twitter site? Our social media site provides a window into the wonderful teaching and learning that is going on at Wolftrap. Also, we honor our staff on our Twitter site and connect with other great events around FCPS and Vienna. Please join today! @WolftrapES

Warmly,

Dr. Maggie Grove
Principal

Wofltrap PTA

Hello Wolftrap community! Many of you know our PTA from the visible events and programs we run at the school. What you may not know is how much our PTA does behind-the-scenes to help our students, teachers, and school. In the last two weeks alone, the PTA has: purchased new soccer and basketballs for outdoor recess; purchased toner for printers in the school; pledged over $6,500 to help keep field trip costs lower this year so all students can participate; and awarded $400 in teacher grants. That is just what we have accomplished in the past two weeks! This type of continued support is made possible by PTA membership dues, Friends of Wolftrap donations, and all the families who participate in our PTA fundraisers (grab those Skate Night tickets and 5k registrations!). Thanks for your continued support of the Wolftrap PTA.

Teacher Appreciation: 1st Grade Sponsor

Our wonderful teachers and school staff have been working tirelessly to keep our school running and our children safe. To recognize their ongoing efforts, the teacher appreciation committee will be organizing a monthly event for all teachers and staff. Each month will be sponsored by a different grade level.

This month, the first grade will be sponsoring a breakfast for our amazing teachers! To make this easy on parents, we are asking parents of first graders to contribute $5-10 (or whatever they feel comfortable with) via Venmo to @michelle-scalise-5 or @wrosner by March 25.

If you have any questions or would like to contribute in another way, please contact mzscalise@gmail.com or wendy.l.rosner@gmail.com.

Outdoor Lunch volunteers are needed

Nicer weather is upon us, which means students will have more regular opportunities to eat lunch in the tent. We need volunteers to assist our staff with supervising lunch and cleaning tables in the tent. Sign up here to volunteer today, and note that students don't eat outside when it is freezing, raining, or high winds..

Donations Needed for 5K Basket Raffle

basket raffle

Following a couple of years off, we are once again holding the Basket Raffle on the day of the 5K and Fun Run on Sunday April 24th! We are seeking donations to be raffled off in the baskets.

For convenience, each grade level has been assigned a donation theme and a corresponding Amazon Wish List for each grade has been created. Purchases from the list will be sent directly to the 5k & Fun Run Event Committee Lead. See the list here.

While there is a wish list for each grade, you are welcome to purchase new items for any theme. If you have a great donation item and you prefer to drop it off, donation drop offs will start March 14th at Wolftrap front office. Donations will be accepted until Friday, April 15, 2022.

Got extra large baskets taking up room in your house? The 5k Raffle Basket team is looking for donations. Drop off at the front office starting March 14th.

Email the 5k team at wolftrap5k@gmail.com for any additional coordination.

Community Events

Calling all Rising 7th Grade families! Kilmer PTA is hosting a community event on March 25th at 7:30pm at Skatequest for all rising 7th-grade families (1800 Michael Faraday Ct. Reston). Tickets are $12 at the door. See the flyer for more information.

Kilmer Middle School’s Drama Department is excited to announce their performance of Matilda JR!

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

General admission performances are Friday, March 18th (7pm), Saturday, March 19th (2pm & 7pm), Friday, March 25th (7pm) and Saturday, March 26th (2pm & 7pm)! Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at www.kmsdrama.org (starting March 7th) or at all lunches at Kilmer Middle School the week of March 7th.  TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD AT THE DOOR.
