Glasgow Community Gazette - March 13

Powell

Greetings!

This Saturday we were going to have more than 250 FCPS students and parents choose to attend school for the Inspire Conference 2022, but the snow and weather caused us to reschedule for after spring break. The event is funded by some of Glasgow’s share of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief aid, or ESSER III funding – money given to states by the federal government to help address any pandemic-related issues that may be impacting students. The conference is designed to boost reading, math and social-emotional skills, as well as get students and parents alike inspired to think about college and goal-setting for the future. Also, this past week one of our students was interviewed by the news based on her experience at the Inspire Conference we held in the Fall. So proud of our students! We will communicate the new date within the coming weeks.

Glasgow, Holmes, and Poe Middle Schools are located in the Mason District of Fairfax County. They currently house sixth grade students, which is a different set-up from other middle schools across all other neighboring school districts. During the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) process in February 2021, the School Board unanimously approved two follow-on motions to assess a reconfiguration of middle schools with a Grade 6-8 arrangement. Parent/caregiver engagement will be an important part of this evaluation.

Parent/Caregiver Engagement for Poe, Holmes, and Glasgow Middle Schools and the elementary feeder schools is proposed as follows:

  • Brief survey in all eight languages
  • Parent Meetings (Monday, March 14, 6-7 p.m.: Register now / Monday, March 14, 7:30-8:30 p.m.: Register now )
  • Focus Groups

Lastly, parents can now request access to weekly parent reports via the FCPS website: Technology Support for Families.

  • FCPS will validate the enrolling parent’s email in SIS, and once processed, the parent will receive a weekly report over each weekend.
  • The weekend report will come from IT’s internet content filtering service, Lightspeed.

For more information, including a sample view of the Parent Report and the Internet Use Parent Portal, visit Lightspeed Parent Report information page. As always, if you have any questions or needs, please let me know.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

YEARBOOK PICTURES NEEDED:  Attention Glasgow Community.  The Yearbook crew could really use your help.  We are in desperate need of photos for the yearbook.  It is our goal to represent EVERY single student from Glasgow in our book, The Pride.  We are lacking a great number of people and student populations.  We would absolutely love more candid pictures, of students having fun and being themselves.  Examples of this could be sporting events, competitions, friends playing in the back yard or at a get together.   If you can snag some pictures of your student AND their friends without masks,  that is even better.  Please take some pictures of your students and submit them using this form.  Please be sure to include your email, names of students, and what is happening in the pictures to ensure accuracy.  Thank you so very much for your help.   If you have any questions, please email our yearbook adviser,  Rushel Grillo: rngrillo1@fcps.edu.  Thank you.

The PTA is seeking 3 volunteers to serve on the Nominating Committee to help find candidates to serve on the PTA Board for next school year. Your responsibilities would be to: 1) Coordinate with the current PTA Board members to find candidates to run for next year's officer positions; 2) Be available to provide descriptions of the various Board positions to potential candidates (this information will be provided to you); and 3) Present the nominees for Board positions at the April 26, PTA meeting. Your responsibilities will be over after this meeting.

Elections for PTA Board positions will be held on May 31, 2022. As the terms are for 1 year, we will be seeking candidates for all positions.
