Spring Hill ES Panther Press

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Families,

Today, we had our American Heart Association Fun Run. Not only did we have fun, our students raised $12,485.65. Thank you to all our families.

Our staff and students did a wonderful job with our annual tornado drill this week. Safety drills are important to help schools analyze their plans and ensure students and staff know what to do in an emergency situation.

Our Family Engagement Survey is coming to your email the afternoon of Sunday, March 13. Please participate—your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS’ practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the survey, and it will be available in eight languages. For more information, please watch this short video from Superintendent Brabrand and visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage. Your voice matters!

     Have a wonderful weekend!

Spirit week

Albuterol Availability for K-12 Students

In accordance with the Code of Virginia 22.1-274.2 each school in FCPS will have stock albuterol inhalers and valved holding chambers available to be administered to K-12 students with no known history of asthma who are believed to be having a respiratory emergency.

Stock albuterol inhalers are not to be administered to the following:

  • Students below the age of four
  • Staff
  • Visitors

The stock albuterol inhalers will be administered by school board employees (to include local health department employees assigned to public schools) who have received training in the administration of albuterol inhalers.

Don’t Forget to Spring Forward!

This Sunday, March 13, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark.

Help your child stay safe by having him or her wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run or dart into the street or cross between parked cars.

Testing Updates

SEL Screener (K-6 students)

The spring SEL screener testing window will open on April 12th and run through May 6th. If you prefer your child not participate in the SEL screener, please fill out the opt-out form located here(https://www.fcps.edu/node/43941).  Parents that already submitted an opt-out form do not need to submit a new opt-out form.

Teachers set the specific dates for testing in their classes. If you do not want your student to take part in the SEL screener, please return the opt-out form to your child’s teacher.

More information, including a short video about the SEL screener in FCPS and the screener questions, can be found on the SEL Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43892). Please contact Amy Briggs (arbriggs@fcps.edu) , assistant principal, with any questions or concerns.

From the Healthy Minds Blog: Assisting Children in Developing a Healthy Self-Esteem

Self-esteem and self-concept gradually develop over time, beginning at a very young age. As children grow and develop, they begin to examine their abilities, become more independent, and assimilate information and feedback from others. Self-esteem can be defined as the evaluation of self, and it includes feelings of overall happiness and satisfaction, as well as how important one feels. Support from others is deemed important in children's development of a healthy self-esteem.

The Healthy Minds Blog has some tips and strategies that parents and teachers can implement to build self-esteem and prevent a low self-concept in children.
