CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

This week is National School Social Work Week! We greatly appreciate our school social workers, JaQuese Hawkins and Nilofar Naderi. This year we are especially grateful for the support they provide our students and families as we navigate difficulties that have arisen over the course of the pandemic.

I want to congratulate our community for the grace with which we have made the transition to a mask-optional environment. We have had some instances in which students needed to be reminded to be kind to others with a different preference. Please reinforce this message at home as well.

We have enjoyed the spring weather this past weekend has ushered in. Our clocks will spring forward this Sunday evening, which means more sunshine in the evenings! As the days get warmer, your child may be more likely to ride their bicycle to school. Please be sure your child has a bike lock -- we have had a couple of unlocked bicycles get stolen from the rack during the school day.

Today you should have received an invitation from FCPS surveys to complete a response about my leadership at CWES. This survey is a part of the principal evaluation process and your anonymous responses will be shared with me and my supervisor. I appreciate the time you take to provide this important feedback.

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L

Principal Evaluation Feedback

Your Views and Opinions Are Important to Us!

All CWES parents/guardians will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism. Understanding that this has been another unusual year, the impacts of COVID-19 will be taken into consideration when reviewing the feedback.

The questionnaire will be collected online between March 7 and March 18. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter!

Kindergarten (& New First Grader) Orientation Activities

This year we will have TWO events to welcome our newest class of CWES Cougars!

Wednesday, March 30, 6:30 PM-7:30 PM: Parents will join our K team for a virtual presentation of our kindergarten program.

Thursday, March 31, 3:00 PM-4:15 PM: Rising kindergartners will come to our school for an in-person orientation, rotating through all of our kindergarten classrooms to experience a slice of life in kindergarten. (NOTE: This is an early release day for current students).

Rising first graders who are new to CWES next year are also welcome to join us for this in-person orientation!

Do you know a neighbor with a rising kindergartner, or a family with a rising first grader who isn't attending CWES yet?

Please encourage them to register on our website ASAP so we have accurate numbers for staffing our classes for next year!

Back-to-School Pediatric Immunization Clinic on March 12

The State of Virginia requires immunizations for entry into kindergarten, 7th grade, 12th grade, and when transferring into FCPS. The Fairfax County Health Department will be offering a special immunization clinic for Fairfax County students to complete their school vaccine requirements (the COVID-19 vaccine is not a required vaccine).

The clinic will be held on Saturday, March 12, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Annandale District Office, 7611 Little River Turnpike, #400-E, Annandale, VA 22003. Appointments are required.

To make an appointment, call 703-246-7100.

Family Intent to Depart CWES, 2022-2023

Projecting our student enrollment next year is an important part of predicting the numbers of teachers at each grade level that we will be granted as part of the staffing process.

If you are moving out of the area or otherwise moving on from CWES, please take a moment to complete this Google Form for each of your children currently in grades K-5 who will no longer be with us next year.

On a personal note, we will miss you. But remember, once a cougar, always a cougar!
