What a weekend! Between the snow yesterday and the incredible day today, I think we are in for a great Spring season this year. I will keep my message short this evening, but I wanted to share that our students did an EXCELLENT job in getting to class on time this week. We will continue to encourage all students to make sure they are prioritizing arriving on time to classes and I appreciate your support!

Your Feedback is Important
This spring all Luther Jackson MS parents/guardians will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism. Understanding that this has been another unusual year, the impacts of COVID-19 will be taken into consideration when reviewing the feedback.
The questionnaire will be collected online between March 7 and March 18. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter!

Rising 9th Grade Activities Fair Field Trip
On Friday, March 25, eighth grade students have the opportunity to attend the High School Activities Fair at Falls Church, Madison, and Oakton. Students will receive information about athletic, academic, and extracurricular programs available to them in high school. Students received a permission form in PE/Health. Students should return the signed permission form to their PE teacher or to Mr. Hoffert.

National School Social Work Month
March is National Social Work Month and March 6-12, 2022, was National School Social Work Week. We are very fortunate to have Ms. Lisa Hershaft at LJMS, and we would like to acknowledge and recognize the impactful work that she does in supporting students, families, and their communities.

Mindfulness Mondays
Encourage your student to sign up for Mindfulness Mondays, which happens during A session every Monday. Mindfulness Mondays is an afterschool opportunity that supports students growth in managing stress and being more present in the moment. Topics in Mindfulness Mondays include, but are not limited to, weekly reflection, practicing breathing techniques to refocus the mind and fitness to relieve stress. On Monday, March 14th & March 21st students will have the opportunity to participate in Yoga as a way to be active and also give students a stress outlet. Students should sign up via the afterschool sign up form that is shared in Schoology and on the After School website.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) commits to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning (SEL). The School Board has approved a screener to review students’ skills and experiences in these areas. FCPS staff will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for students in grades K-12. The screener provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs.
SEL skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.
Students in grades 3-12 will be screened in the fall and spring. In these grade levels, students will reflect and report on their own skills and experiences. Screener data will only be accessible to teachers, administrators, and staff with legitimate educational interests. Results will be maintained in secure files and databases accessible only to these individuals. Screener results will be used with other data to inform practices for SEL skill development and mental wellness. Screener data will also help staff plan interventions for students with identified needs. Parents and guardians will receive an individualized report regarding their student’s screener results following each assessment window. School staff will be available to discuss results with families on planned support.
In addition to the SEL screener, students will also be asked a 5 question survey about their growth during the school year in several areas such as: making friends, self-esteem/confidence, organization and stress management.
Las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Fairfax (FCPS) se comprometen a apoyar el bienestar mental y el aprendizaje social y emocional (SEL) de todos los estudiantes. La Junta Escolar ha aprobado una evaluación para revisar las habilidades y experiencias de los estudiantes en estas áreas. PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to return this form unless you do not want your child to participate in the SEL screener this year.
Course Registration for the 22-23 School Year
Most of our students met with school counselors last week and received one-on-one academic advising for rising 8th and 9th grade course registration. Those conversations will continue throughout the month of February. Courses will be then be added to SIS throughout February and into March. Madison and Oakton students are entering courses directly into SIS.

Did you know that Luther Jackson Middle School PTA has a food pantry on site that supports students and their families who are facing food insecurity? If you are passionate about caring for our kids, we need you on the Food Team! Volunteers can check out our new SignUp Genius to sign up for regular slots picking up donations or working in the pantry. We are also looking for 1 or 2 people who are able to dig in and help with operations such as organizing volunteers, planning funding and food drives, finding grant opportunities, and ensuring the smooth operation of the pantry in general. - Late buses run Monday through Thursday. Friday is pickup only.
- Late buses typically arrive between 4:45 and 5:00, so students could arrive home as late as 5:30 or 5:45. You are also welcome to pick them up any time from after school by 4:45pm.
- Your student's late bus is DIFFERENT than the regular late bus. We will go over late bus assignments with students each day after school.

Model United Nations
Club Sponsor: Mr. Michael Goff-- meets Wednesdays, A session
On 5 March 2022, six LJMS students participated in the Langley HS Model UN conference, VIMUNC IX. All three pairs participated in the same committee, United Nations Environment Program. The teams did exceptionally well and everyone had a good time. The pair of Jason Ye and Natalie Basin, representing Israel, took Best Delegate award for the committee session.
