Dear Kent Gardens' Families,

We had another great week that included dressing up for 2/22/2022 and Scrabble Spirit Day.  We are looking forward to Reading Week and have highlighted the days below. Reminder that we have an early release on Thursday, March 3rd and a professional learning day on Friday, March 4th.

As detailed in Dr. Brabrand's communication, on Tuesday, March 1st, legislation goes into effect  whereby parents and guardians may elect for your child(ren) not to wear a mask on school property. There will be no formal process required for parents who elect for their child(ren) not to wear a mask on school property.  We ask that you do share with your child(ren) before March 1st your family's preference. At this time, following CDC guidance, masks must be worn on school buses. Please do review the communication remitted on Friday.  Note there may continue to be revisions and updates going forward.

Some highlights to note for the upcoming week:

  • Parent Coffee - In person - in the tent - March 3 - 8:30 - 9:15 a.m.
  • Note the  kindergarten virtual orientation for parents on 3/25 and the in person parent tour and student 'Meet and Greet' on 3/31.  Parents must sign up your rising kindergarten student. See the links in the blurb below.
  • We had a wonderful turnout in the spelling bee initial session. Thanks to all who participated. Parents of students participating in the last round have been contacted.  The students will participate in person and parents will be able to join virtually.  Ms. Talley will communicate with you directly.  Questions? please email sjtalley@fcps.edu.

Congrats to our four KG students who are advancing to the Virginia Math Counts competition. We are proud of all of our students who participate in the MC2.  Good luck to them as they go forward.

Please make sure you health screen your child before sending them to school on February 28th.  If your child does not feel well or presents with any COVID-like symptoms, please keep them at home and seek medical advice.  We appreciate your support in keeping our Kent Gardens community healthy!  For parent convenience, click here for the Daily Health Questionnaire.

Thanks for your continued support!

Positivity Project: Enthusiasm

This week, we are focusing on Enthusiasm. You approach life with excitement and energy. You energize people around you.

"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.”

                                                          ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • How can you tap into enthusiasm for things you don’t like so much?
  • How can you encourage each other in the things that you love and the things you don’t like so much?
  • What type of mindset do you need to have to be able to approach things in life you don’t like with enthusiasm?

Student Screening Testing

FCPS will move to a dynamic testing plan.  Screening testing will be available during moderate, substantial and high community transmission to the greatest extent practicable in alignment with CDC guidance. Screening testing for students will not be offered during low transmission.

At this time, we will still have student testing until notified that transmission rates are consistently lower.  There will be testing on Monday, February 28th. Please note it is a random selection.

One-time parent/legal guardian consent is required to begin COVID screening testing for a student to be tested at school. You may withdraw your consent for testing at any time. If you want your child to begin participating in COVID-19 screening testing, you must pre-register your child(ren) and provide consent using the LTS secure online portal. If you do not want your child to participate in COVID-19 screening testing, no action is required. You will have the option each week to update your child’s vaccination and consent for testing.

For all the details about optional COVID-19 screening testing, visit the FCPS website and review the FCPS COVID-19 Screening Testing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document.  Screening testing is a recommended layered prevention strategy that keeps Kent Gardens safe for in-person learning. Thank you for considering enrolling your child.
