Glasgow Community Gazette - February 27

Powell

Greetings!

This weekend was a peaceful time with the family! Last week it was good to connect with the MOMNetwork and have a community engagement event with some of our Mothers of Muslims in our community. Also, I was excited that we had some students get the experience of the Synetic Theater with their field trip last week.

As Dr. Brabrand shared on Friday, you may choose for your child to opt out of the division’s mask requirement starting March 1. There will be no formal process to let us know your choice– no notes or documentation will be needed. We strongly recommend that students continue to participate in universal masking to help protect their classmates, teachers, and staff who have health concerns. The ability to not participate in universal masking only applies to students. We will continue to follow our roll back plan, shared earlier this month, which will be implemented when we reach moderate transmission, and remain there for seven days. This week, we saw our community transmission level drop into the substantial category and we anticipate we could be at or very close to moderate community transmission as early as next week. FCPS will formally announce when we are ready to make this transition.

Please talk with your child before March 1 about your family’s decision about wearing masks in schools. Families of special needs children who may need additional consideration for health reasons should work with their IEP or 504 teams. I assure all students and families that Glasgow Middle School will remain a caring and supportive place to learn. As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

As we slide into March, we are still focused on our School Improvement areas of ensuring students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts and Mathematics. We are continuing to refine and perfect the use of the reading, writing and math workshop model within our classes. Our professional learning communities, walkthrough process and our intervention blocks are key strategies our staff uses within our continuous improvement.

This spring all Glasgow Middle School parents/guardians will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism.

The questionnaire will be collected online between March 7 and March 18. This message is legitimate and feedback on my performance is a regular part of the FCPS principal evaluation process. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter! We have had some awesome moments this year with our kids and we will have many more to come! (Please see the images below.) Have a great day!

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

Lost or Damaged Laptops and Chargers: The FCPS laptop is issued to you for the entire school year and students are expected to use it only for school work under the direction of their teachers.  Students should not use it for personal activities.  This includes checking social media, emailing friends, or playing games.  FCPS monitors the use of its laptops so you should not expect privacy or confidentiality even when using it for school related work.

Here are some quick device care tips to ensure it works properly and avoid negligent damage:

  • Shutdown and restart a couple times a week
  • Keep laptop in a safe and secure place
  • Avoid eating or drinking near device
  • NEVER carry the laptop by the screen
  • Charge laptop each night to have a full battery each school day
  • No unauthorized downloads, including but not limited to: social media or video games
  • See more Laptop Care instructions here

Students are responsible for anything that happens to their device and should not share laptops between students. If another student were to use the computer and damage it, you are still responsible for paying for a new one. Devices damaged beyond normal wear and tear require a $481 for a replacement device. Significant, purposeful damage may also result in disciplinary consequences. The full replacement fee for lost computer equipment: Dell 3310 Laptop Computer ($481.00) and Dell 3310 Charger ($23). We need to take care of our FCPS devices. These devices are tools to help us learn and communicate in ways we ordinarily couldn’t, and in using the FCPS device we are accepting responsibility for its care and function. If there is a functional issue with the device, take it to Glasgow’s technology office in B135 for service immediately.

Celebrating 2nd Quarter Honor Roll: We are proud of the hard work students have been doing so far this year in all of their classes and we look forward to celebrating students who have earned either All A or A/B Honor Roll. All A and A/B Honor Roll Certificates will be handed out in Panther Time on March 2nd. Please congratulate students on all of their hard work!

YEARBOOK PICTURES NEEDED:  Attention Glasgow Community.  The Yearbook crew could really use your help.  We are in desperate need of photos for the yearbook.  It is our goal to represent EVERY single student from Glasgow in our book, The Pride.  We are lacking a great number of people and student populations.  We would absolutely love more candid pictures, of students having fun and being themselves.  Examples of this could be sporting events, competitions, friends playing in the back yard or at a get together.   If you can snag some pictures of your student AND their friends without masks,  that is even better.  Please take some pictures of your students and submit them using this form.  Please be sure to include your email, names of students, and what is happening in the pictures to ensure accuracy.  Thank you so very much for your help.   If you have any questions, please email our yearbook adviser,  Rushel Grillo: rngrillo1@fcps.edu.  Thank you.
