Here are some quick updates for this week at Luther Jackson!
Your Feedback is Important
This spring all Luther Jackson MS parents/guardians will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism. Understanding that this has been another unusual year, the impacts of COVID-19 will be taken into consideration when reviewing the feedback.
The questionnaire will be collected online between March 7 and March 18. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter!

Important Message from FCPS
This message was sent earlier to all FCPS families. Here it is again for your reference.
Dear FCPS Community
Late Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated health guidance that included new metrics for determining COVID-19 community levels. Based on this new guidance, Fairfax County’s current COVID-19 community level is low.
Based on these new metrics and CDC guidance, FCPS will now adjust our roll back plan and allow everyone - staff and parents/guardians of FCPS students - to make a choice whether or not they will wear a mask starting Tuesday, March 1.
Monday will be a day to prepare for this transition. Students and staff will have the day to get answers to questions and prepare for the change. We will share additional information tomorrow that will help us all prepare.
The decision to wear a mask or not is a personal one for our staff and families, based on many factors. The FCPS community values our Caring Culture, and we will see that value in action as we treat each other with respect and understanding during this transition.
Families, please talk with your children about these upcoming changes so they are prepared for this transition and understand your expectations for them at school.
We are encouraged by the continued decline in COVID-19 cases in our community. However, we are also committed to keeping our schools safe for all to learn and work in person. Please continue to do your part to maintain a healthy environment by monitoring for illness and staying home when sick.
To Elect For Your Child Not to Wear a Mask in School
Starting March 1, parents and guardians may elect for their children not to wear a mask on school property. There will be no formal process required for those who elect for their child not to wear a mask on school property. Please talk with your child before March 1 so they will be aware of your family’s preference for mask wearing at school.
Exceptions
Universal mask wearing continues to apply in the following scenarios:
- On school buses/vans (federal requirement)
- During off-campus activities where masks are required by the venue (ex: field trip)
- When attending school on days 6-10 of a quarantine (families who do not want their student to wear a mask on these days will need to complete the full 10 day quarantine at home.)
- When participating in Test to Stay
Respecting Student Choice and Need
Teachers and school staff will not treat students differently based on their choice. This includes seating arrangements in classrooms, cafeterias, or other gathering spaces. Please refer to the FCPS website for guidance around bullying behaviors as referenced in the SR&R. Families of special needs children who may need additional consideration for health reasons should work with their IEP or 504 teams.

Luther Jackson Educator receives award for Outstanding New Secondary Teacher for Falls Church Pyramid
Ms Kaia Lazo, Current AVID Coordinator and History 7 teacher at Luther Jackson MS has received the FC Pyramid Outstanding New Secondary Teacher award for 2021-22. Please join me in congratulating Ms. Lazo on this well deserved recognition for all of her leadership and dedication to her students. We are all so very PROUD to have her as our colleague and friend.

Did you know that Luther Jackson Middle School PTA has a food pantry on site that supports students and their families who are facing food insecurity? If you are passionate about caring for our kids, we need you on the Food Team! Volunteers can check out our new SignUp Genius to sign up for regular slots picking up donations or working in the pantry. We are also looking for 1 or 2 people who are able to dig in and help with operations such as organizing volunteers, planning funding and food drives, finding grant opportunities, and ensuring the smooth operation of the pantry in general. Course Registration for the 22-23 School Year
Most of our students met with school counselors last week and received one-on-one academic advising for rising 8th and 9th grade course registration. Those conversations will continue throughout the month of February. Courses will be then be added to SIS throughout February and into March. Madison and Oakton students are entering courses directly into SIS.

- Students should check Schoology for messages about how to sign up for specific activities
- Late buses run Monday through Thursday. Friday is pickup only.
- Late buses typically arrive between 4:30 and 5:00, so students could arrive home as late as 5:30 or 6:00. You are also welcome to pick them up any time from after school by 5:00.
- Your student's late bus is DIFFERENT than the regular late bus. We will go over late bus assignments with students each day after school.

Please keep your child home if they are not feeling well. If your child has Covid symptoms at school, you will need to pick your child up within 30 minutes being notified. They will then need the required testing and documentation to return to school. Please note that all families should have a plan for picking their children up in these situations. The plan should include someone available to be at the school within 30 minutes and on their emergency care card.
Please remember to screen your child for the following Covid symptoms before sending them to school:

Counselors are assigned by teams and are your first point of contact for any question or concerns you might have. The student schedules will identify your student’s school counselor.
