Community Review of Elementary English Language Arts Basal Instructional Resources
Fairfax County Public Schools will adopt new Elementary School Language Arts Basal Instructional Resources for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years. A review committee composed of community members, administrators, and teachers will meet in February and March to review the instructional materials under consideration and community feedback. Public review of the recommended materials is part of the process for selecting new resources.
Elementary English Language Arts basal instructional resources may be accessed in person and online January 31 through February 28, 2022. Digital materials for public review and comment will be available at the following link: https://www.fcps.edu/node/36853. Those reviewing instructional materials may complete an electronic comment sheet available at the following link: https://forms.gle/NyDax8N3NXQBp1mh8. Hard copies of instructional materials will also be available in the lobby of Willow Oaks Administrative Center.
Willow Oaks is open each business day from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and extended hours will be provided until 7:00 p.m. on the following days: February 3, February 10, February 17, and February 24, 2022. All community feedback will be shared with the review committee and with School Board members before the vote at the School Board regular meeting.

Parent Workshop: Helping Children Cope with Anxiety
With all of the challenges we've faced this year, children may seem more anxious than ever. Hunt Valley is partnering with our WSHS Pyramid elementary schools to offer a special virtual presentation Tuesday, February 15 at 7:00 pm for parents on how to help children cope with anxiety. Led by our keynote speaker Rachel Bailey, this workshop will teach parents how to respond effectively to their child in the moment when they are feeling worried, shutting down, or even becoming irritable or angry. Parents will also learn strategies to foster their child's overall resilience, so they're better equipped to handle obstacles now and in the future.

Become a Friend of the Chesapeake Bay
The Second Grade Team is excited that our grant to restore our butterfly garden was accepted. This grant money is made possible through families and communities that purchase the Chesapeake Bay License Plate to help keep the bay clean. Proceeds from the sale of these plates will help citizens keep the bay healthy by restoring wetlands, planting buffers around waterways, promoting marine life restoration, decreasing pollution, and providing educational programs. Families can join the cause by becoming a friend of The Chesapeake Bay for an annual $25 dollar fee they can have personalized revenue-sharing license plates with $15 dollars going to the Chesapeake Restoration Fund. Lost and Found
We have placed all of the Lost-and-Found items that we have collected around the school and placed them in marked bins out front of Door 1 (our main entrance). If your student is missing any items like a coat, hat, gloves, masks, water bottles, lunchbox etc., please take time to drive by the school during the winter break and check our Lost-and-Found.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Breakfast
Help the Hunt Valley PTA celebrate our awesome Hunt Valley teachers and staff with the February Staff Appreciation Breakfast on Wednesday, February 16!
The PTA is collecting items to show our Hunt Valley teachers and staff our appreciation. Items being collected are specialty hand soaps and lotions for staff restrooms and store-bought, individually wrapped snack items as well as coffee and flavored seltzers.
