Wellness Spirit Week

Research shows that FUN, REST, EXERCISE, SOCIAL SUPPORT and NUTRITION affect our mood, energy level, and over all well-being. Please join us in Woodburn’s Wellness Spirit Week and Challenge. We will focus on learning, improving, and celebrating these five areas of wellness!

Dear Woodburn Families,

February has arrived and it will be filled with opportunities for our wildcats to show their school spirit.  We hope all students will participate in our Wellness Spirit Week Challenge next week.  More details can be found above and will be shared with students.

The 100th day of school is right around the corner.  Stay tuned for ways in which we will celebrate this special day and engage in fun math activities as a school.

Black History Month at Woodburn

Black History Month

Woodburn is celebrating Black History Month by featuring notable Black Americans, past and present, on the morning news show. In the library, we are featuring popular award-winning Black authors and illustrators such as Nic Stone, Jason Reynolds, Kadir Nelson, and Vashti Harrison. We will be reading biographies and stories about the lives and contributions of Black Americans during our library time.

Thank You, Ms. Coury & Ms. Gannon

Counselors

Woodburn is so incredibly grateful to have Ms. Coury and Ms. Gannon as our school counselors.  Their warmth, support, and impact is felt across the school.  Please join us in recognizing them next week.  We invite you to send in a handwritten note created by you and your child.

Kindergarten Registration

Do you have a child at home who will be five by September 30th? Please start your registration now. If you have any neighbors with little ones, please send this information to them as well. These are the 5 steps you need to take to register your child. If you have questions regarding kindergarten registration, please reach out Ms. Garcia or call our main office at 703-641-8200.

Rising 7th Grade Course Selection Night

Thursday, February 17th from 6-7pm is Woodburn’s Virtual 7th Grade Course Selection Night!

6th graders and their parents will meet with teachers to discuss and finalize course selections for middle school.

Students will receive the link to complete Luther Jackson’s google course selection form on the evening of the event.

Vaccination Status

You may wish to voluntarily share your child’s COVID-19 vaccination information. However, we do not require your child’s vaccination information and no school employee will ask for your child’s vaccination status.

If you would like to provide us with your child’s vaccination status, please bring your child’s COVID-19 vaccination card or a photocopy of the card to Ms. Garcia, our student registrar in the main office.

Elementary Language Arts Resource Review

Parents, students, and community members have a unique opportunity to help FCPS select important learning resources. These reviews do not happen frequently, so selected resources will be in classrooms for years and are a significant financial investment.

Resources for elementary language arts are being reviewed through February 28. Interested individuals can review and provide feedback on digital resources online. Physical texts can be reviewed at the Willow Oaks Administrative Center in the lobby. Please ask about the books at the reception desk from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday-Friday. In-person review hours will be extended to 7 p.m. on February 3, 10, 17, and 24. You are encouraged to review both sets of resources for the full catalog of resources under review. Learn more about the elementary language arts resource review here.

Health & Safety Reminders

Monitoring Your Child's Health

Please continue to you use the FCPS health screening questionnaire to monitor your child's health each day.  This will support our efforts to keep all students and staff as safe as possible. If your child has Covid-like symptoms at school, you will be asked to pick them up immediately.

Please use the health screening questionnaire to screen your child for Covid-19 symptoms before sending them to school each day.

COVID-19 Response Flowchart for Families

When a positive COVID-19 case is reported at Woodburn, a collaborative effort to investigate close contacts and determine the appropriate next steps for affected students begins. To help families know what to expect, the process is outlined on the FCPS website.

COVID Case Notification Process

Once a week, either on Friday or the last day of school for the week, school leadership will share an update if there were any COVID-19 positive cases confirmed in the school that week.

Potential close contacts of the positive case that are paused from in-person instruction and activities will continue to receive real time notifications.

The FCPS COVID-19 Health Metrics webpage is updated daily for families who wish to know about cases in real-time.

Where to Find a Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccine

FCPS is encouraging all parents whose children are eligible to get vaccinated. We know that vaccination is the way out of this pandemic, and we are asking you to help us continue to make our schools as safe as they possibly can be.

The Fairfax County Health Department’s webpage has resources for finding and scheduling a vaccine appointment. Up-to-date information about vaccination opportunities is available on the FCPS website.
