Thoreau Matters
January 28, 2022
Dear Thoreau Families,
The students and staff have settled in this week to the second semester and I am so thankful to our amazing student services team for all of their hard work in creating new schedules! This week the counselors from Madison, Oakton and Marshall High School have finished their in-person meetings with our eighth graders at Thoreau. The next step is for our counselors to meet individually with each eighth grader to plan their high school transition and course selections. Thank you for understanding that their communication responses may be slower than normal during this very busy time.
In case you have not seen it yet, the Fairfax County School Board voted to adopt a calendar for the 2022-23 school year that focuses on instruction, and student and operational needs.
Highlights include:
- Alignment with surrounding jurisdictions.
- 14 professional work days for teacher planning and professional development time.
- Additional days off. Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Orthodox Good Friday, and Diwali will now be designated as student holidays. (Eid and Lunar New Year fall on a non-school day in 2022).
- Inclusion of Veterans Day as a student holiday and staff work day.
- A change in FCPS’ approach to “O” days. Regulation 2234 will be revised to allow new instruction to take place on days denoted as religious and cultural observances. Tests, quizzes, tryouts that cannot be rescheduled, and sporting events and other school-sponsored special events and activities will still be prohibited.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Teresa Khuluki

COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing Available for All Students
All students now have access to COVID-19 drive-through diagnostic testing at locations across the county, including one in each of the FCPS school regions. Students who have COVID-19 symptoms or have been identified as a close contact to someone with COVID-19 are encouraged to test quickly to help reduce the spread of the virus. Testing is also a step in the return to school process following illness or exposure.
A full list of locations and schedules is available on our website.
Appointments are not required but families must register through FCPS’ secure online portal before testing.
More information about FCPS’ COVID-19 testing program, including diagnostic testing, is available online.
