FH Weekly Update - 1/23/2022

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

Welcome to the second semester! It is hard to believe that our school year is halfway over. While we didn't see much snow last week during our snow days, we did see some fantastic virtual learning in our classrooms. Thank you to all our families for supporting our students with their technology and learning at home on Thursday. Tomorrow, our teachers will be engaged in professional learning as we prepare for the second semester.

This week, we are eager to highlight an exciting partnership between the Thomas Jefferson High School Technology Club and our ID classroom at Freedom Hill. We are so proud of our students who have been working incredibly hard to build communication skills using assistive technology devices. A big thank you to our truly incredible classroom staff, Ms. Church, Ms. Park, and Ms. Nakano, as well as our Assistive Technology Coach, Mrs. Fleming. You can check out a great article and video on their learning here. They have also been featured on Fox and WTOP!

We look forward to seeing all our students Tuesday morning for a fantastic week of learning!

As always, please contact us if you have any questions, concerns or celebrations.

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Assistant Principal

Positivity Project: Supporting Others When They Struggle

2

This week, we are working on ONE of the FIVE overarching components of the Positivity Project. Supporting others when they struggle is an important test of our character every single day.

“We rise by lifting others.”

                                                          ~Robert Ingersoll

When you put others first, you look to comfort people in the small, day-to-day disappointments, whether they are friends, classmates, acquaintances, family, and even rivals.

Think of a time you went through something difficult and someone encouraged you. How can you pass on that act of kindness this week?

Safety First!

If you child is experiencing any of these symptoms, please keep your child at home! In addition, if any member of your household has been diagnosed with COVID-19, your student may not report to school. Please contact our school clinic or the health department for next steps.

Vaccine Availability for Children Ages 5-11

The Fairfax Health District and Fairfax County Public Schools are hosting free COVID-19 vaccine clinics at 10 schools for students 5-11 years of age. Children do not need to be an FCPS student to attend these clinics. Vaccines will not be available for those 12 years and older. Children must be accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult at all community vaccination sites.

The Fairfax County Health Department’s webpage has information about the clinics and resources for finding and scheduling a vaccine appointment. Up-to-date information about vaccination opportunities is available on our website

Drive Thru Covid Testing - Six FCPS Sites

tst

Students may obtain COVID-19 diagnostic testing at six drive-through sites in Fairfax County. Diagnostic testing is provided for anyone who has symptoms or is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing helps us reduce the virus’ spread and keep our schools safe places for all students to learn. We encourage you to utilize our new diagnostic testing services as needed.

Appointments are not required for diagnostic testing but families must register in the secure online portal. When you register and provide consent for your child to be tested, they will also be added to Freedom Hill's screening testing pool. If you do not wish for them to be part of the weekly screening testing pool, simply log back into the online portal after your child’s test is complete and withdraw consent.

More information about diagnostic and screening testing, including site locations and schedules, is available on our website
