2. GBW Kiss & Ride

In order to help with the flow of traffic during arrival and dismissal, and to keep everyone safe, parents are reminded of the following:

  • Drivers must approach the school entrance by taking a right from Poplar Tree Rd.  Drivers taking a right from Poplar Tree Road into the school entrance have the right of way.
  • Drivers leaving the school must take a right onto Poplar Tree Road. This ensures an efficient flow for Kiss and Ride cars.

Please refer to the map below.  We thank you for helping us make school arrival and dismissal a safe and efficient process.

3. 2022-2023 Kindergarten Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2022, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2022, please complete this form and return it no later than February 4, 2022. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Greenbriar West families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2022-2023 school year. Please email the completed form to Patty Li at pli@fcps.edu. We thank you in advance for returning the form no later than February 4, 2022.

4. Student Technology Update

FCPS is committed to maintaining in-person learning for the remainder of this school year. However, since we are beyond our first five snow days we need to be proactive and prepare for any number of school or class closures or virtual learning scenarios, should events require this on short notice.

To make sure student laptops are ready for home use please assist your child in performing these readiness steps to ensure their devices and accounts are functioning properly on your home network.

At Home - Technology Readiness Steps for Students

  1. Find a location for charging your laptop when you have it at home.  Ideally this is close to where a student keeps their backpack so they can remember to pack it for in person school days.
  2. Log onto your laptop with your student ID and password.
  3. Connect your laptop to your home internet connection.
  4. Login to Google account.  In the Chrome browser, go to www.fcpsschools.net, sign in with your fcpsschools.net account.
  5. Log into Schoology. Make sure you can access your courses.
  6. If you have any issues with these steps from home, go to the Tech Support for Families page for Help Documents or to submit a ticket for support.

Click here for a printable version of the readiness steps.

Students in grades 2 through 6 will be expected to take their laptops home with them each night, charge them overnight, and return with them to school in the morning fully charged. Teachers in grades K-1 will communicate their plan with families around sending laptops home.

If your family does not have internet access in your home, you may request a MiFi device for your student by contacting our school counselors- Anne Flannagan (AJFlannagan@fcps.edu) and Megan McAndrew (msmcandrew@fcps.edu)  The MiFi will allow your child to connect the FCPS laptop to the internet for learning.  The MiFi is filtered to block harmful or inappropriate websites.

Read-a-thon is Coming Soon!

Read-a-thons get your reader excited about reading and it gives friends and family the opportunity to encourage your child to read even more.

GBW’s Read-a-thon starts Monday, February 7, 2022.

About one week before our Read-a-thon starts, we will send home instructions on how to activate your reader's personal page. This is where you will be able to view and record their progress.

We encourage you to activate your reader’s account today by clicking on:  https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/MaWVyX/1 and following the simple instructions.  Enter your student’s first name only.

We've chosen Read-a-thon because it will not take much of your time, gives your child a reason to read and helps in the development of stronger reading skills. The funds raised will go toward more outdoor enhancements to our school as well as the 50th Birthday Bash on March 26!
