Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We are thrilled to have our students back after the extended winter break. It was stunning to see how well students transitioned back to school and classroom routines on Monday and Tuesday. Despite enjoying the break, I think all were ready to get back into a typical school day. Thank you to everyone who attended our PTA meeting Tuesday evening. We did address some questions about our Shrevewood plan to keep our students and staff safe in our building. Please use this link to access the slide deck from the PTA meeting for you to reference. As we all work diligently to keep our students and staff healthy, we want to highlight a couple of things as we learn more every day about COVID.

  • We are seeing that runny noses and sore throats are a very common first symptom of COVID in students. If your child has either of these symptoms, PLEASE keep him/her home and look into getting a COVID test.
  • Please use this list of FCPS diagnostic testing sites if you are in need of a COVID test.
  • This FCPS site will continue to be updated with the latest guidance on isolation (positive COVID test) and quarantine (close contact) information. Please bookmark it so that you have the information if/when you need it.

As always, please contact us if you have any questions, concerns or celebrations.

Thank you for your continued support!

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Susie Lilburn, Assistant Principal

Virtual Snow Days

FCPS shared that our next snow day and those thereafter will be a virtual schedule. Every elementary school will start from 10:30 – 3:15. All schedule information, videos, announcements, and changes will be posted here.  This should be your one-stop-shop to supporting your child and understanding how to access learning.  See the planned schedule for our snow days above. Important information for parents:

  • All instruction will take place through Schoology/Zoom
  • Students and staff are all expected to take laptops home with them each night to prepare for snow and quarantine instructions
  • Student attendance will be taken during morning meeting on snow days.
  • All Shrevewood ES  students & staff will have a midday break for lunch, physical activity, and a break from screen time.
  • Students will access classroom instruction  in their classroom Schoology/Zoom link
    • Academic blocks will begin with synchronous instruction, then teachers may assign students work either on or away from their computers that relate to the content.
    • Students with disabilities will receive support in their virtual classrooms and will meet with their case manager during Small Group time using their classroom teacher’s link.
  • Students will access specials  in the All Students Schoology Course as a grade level
    • These special assignments are asynchronous with choice boards.
  • Preschool teachers will email their parents and determine an age-appropriate schedule/day for their young learners

Here Comes the Bus App

Due to bus driver shortages, some drivers are having to double routes. This may cause students to arrive at the bus stop later than normal. Here Comes the Bus® app is a school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving them real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping them get to the bus stop on time. If your child is a bus rider, we recommend that you download the app. A link to the app and more information can be found here.

Cold Weather Safety

We often have to consider a number of factors related to student activity outdoors during cold weather. Common sense requires us to look beyond a specific temperature and consider factors such as wind chill, whether the ground is frozen or the sun is shining, how well the children are prepared to play outdoors (jackets, gloves, and hats), what activity the children are participating in, and the length of time to be spent outside.

It is the intention of the school to hold recess during cold spells and parents should have their children prepared to play outdoors (jackets, gloves, and hats) as this decision is made by the school each day. During a NWS Wind Chill Advisory, recess will be limited to no more than fifteen (15) minutes for any outdoor activity. During a NWS Wind Chill Warning, we will hold indoor recess.

You can find more information about Cold Weather Safety here.
