Thoreau Matters

January 7, 2022

Dear Thoreau Families,

The week has afforded us all more time not only to enjoy the winter weather, but also to navigate the surge in Covid-19 cases. As we return to school on Monday, the county has made plans in the event we are in need of adjusting our normal operations. Please see below for important reminders and ways that you can help us!

Oakton, Madison and Marshall High Schools have been emailing the parents of rising 9th graders directly about the virtual Curriculum Nights. I also wanted to remind you that high school counselors from these three schools will be meeting with Thoreau 8th grade students through our 3rd Period Advisory Class in the coming weeks. In order to provide additional social distancing, we will split the students into multiple locations, depending on the number of students attending each school. Please note that Oakton’s presentation will be this Monday. Throughout the months of January and February, Thoreau counselors will meet with 8th grade students for 1:1 academic advising sessions to ensure they are registered for the 2022-2023 school year.

Oakton: Monday, January 10th

  • Last Name A-G in Eagle Hall
  • Last Name H-Z in Cafeteria

Madison: Wednesday, January 12th

  • Last Name A-E in Eagle Hall
  • Last Name F-Z in Cafeteria

FCPS has multiple layers of protection we will continue to deploy to mitigate COVID-19 transition in schools to include universal masking, enhanced cleaning and disinfecting, physical distancing to the greatest extent possible, and requiring that students and staff stay home when sick. You can read more about the FCPS plan for the next three weeks on the website.

How You Can Help:

  • Keep your children home when sick.
  • Sign your child up for optional screening testing and make use of our diagnostic testing if your child has symptoms.
  • Remind your children to wear their masks properly, wash their hands regularly, use hand sanitizer.
  • Consider alternative ways to get your child to school, such as walking, cycling or carpooling, to minimize late arrival to school.
  • Students must wear a face-covering appropriately while on the school bus.
  • Access the Bus Delay App to receive current bus delay information.
  • We ask that you get your children vaccinated. Vaccination helps reduce the severity of illness and remains the best tool for ending the pandemic. On Monday, the FDA expanded booster eligibility to 12-15 year-olds and shortened the time needed before receiving a booster shot from at least six months after completion of the initial series to at least five months, for everyone 12 and older. If you need a vaccination or booster, the Fairfax County Health Department website is a great source of information about clinics and other vaccination opportunities. We ask you to help Fairfax County reach its targets for vaccinated residents that will protect us all - staff, students, families and visitors to our schools.
  • Considering becoming a sub or a classroom monitor
