Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

Wow! What a week of snow! I hope the snow provided many opportunities to build snowmen, go sledding, or curl up with a book. We are looking forward to having everyone back on Monday. A huge thank you to our custodial team who worked to get the building cleared twice this week!

As we return from an extended winter break, please make sure you review the Daily Health Screening Questions. Please make sure to keep your child home if they are experiencing any Covid 19 symptoms. If your child tested positive over winter break, please reach out to me and cc the attendance line so we can provide you accurate information on what is needed to return. Please also reach out if your child is considered a close contact or if there is a member of your household who is covid positive.

With the recent surge, the Health Department has shifted some of the responsibilities to us to alleviate the delays in response and the strain on pediatricians' offices. For the most up to date information, please continue to visit FCPS’ Health and Safety Guidance Document. As procedures change and adapt, this document continues to include the most updated information. Please make sure your child is prepared with a well-fitting mask and extras in their backpack.

FCPS began offering surveillance Covid 19 testing. They also offer diagnostic testing for symptomatic students. More information on both of those programs can be found below.

Looking ahead to next week, we will continue to monitor our staffing daily and will adjust as needed to ensure our classrooms are covered. Over the next few weeks as we navigate the COVID surge, we may need to shift staff to cover classrooms, or combine classes to ensure coverage. Our goal is to maintain the current routines as best we can; however, there may be some instructional impacts due to the staffing challenges.

Finally, the Yearbook Order deadline is next Friday, 1/14. Make sure to order one this week if you would like your child to receive a yearbook this year.

Optional Screening Testing for Students Not Fully Vaccinated

FCPS is partnering with LongView International Technology Solutions, Inc. (LTS) to provide testing services for students.

Currently, optional screening testing for Stenwood students takes place on Fridays from 8:45 - 9:30am at school.

One-time parent/legal guardian consent is required to begin COVID screening testing for a student to be tested at school. You may withdraw your consent for testing at any time. If you want your child to begin participating in COVID-19 screening testing, you must pre-register your child(ren) and provide consent using the LTS secure online portal. If you do not want your child to participate in COVID-19 screening testing, no action is required. You will have the option each week to update your child’s vaccination and consent for testing.

For all the details about optional COVID-19 screening testing, visit the FCPS website and review the FCPS COVID-19 Screening Testing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document.

Screening testing is a recommended layered prevention strategy that keeps Stenwood safe for in-person learning. Thank you for considering enrolling your child.

Drive Thru Covid Testing - Six FCPS Sites

Drive thru

Starting back up next week, students may obtain COVID-19 diagnostic testing at six drive-through sites in Fairfax County. Diagnostic testing is provided for anyone who has symptoms or is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing helps us reduce the virus’ spread and keep our schools safe places for all students to learn. I encourage you to utilize our new diagnostic testing services as needed.

Appointments are not required for diagnostic testing but families must register in the secure online portal. When you register and provide consent for your child to be tested, they will also be added to [SCHOOL’S] screening testing pool. If you do not wish for them to be part of the weekly screening testing pool, simply log back into the online portal after your child’s test is complete and withdraw consent.

More information about diagnostic and screening testing, including site locations and schedules, is available on our website

Vaccine Availability for Children Ages 5-11

The Fairfax Health District and Fairfax County Public Schools are hosting free COVID-19 vaccine clinics at 10 schools for students 5-11 years of age. Children do not need to be an FCPS student to attend these clinics. Vaccines will not be available for those 12 years and older. Children must be accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult at all community vaccination sites.

The Fairfax County Health Department’s webpage has information about the clinics and resources for finding and scheduling a vaccine appointment. Up-to-date information about vaccination opportunities is available on our website

Positivity Project: Optimism

PP

This week, we are focusing on Optimism. You expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.

“When the world says, ‘Give Up’, hope whispers, ‘Try it one more time’.”

                                                          ~Author Unknown

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • When were you optimistic in a situation? How could that situation have turned out differently if you weren’t optimistic?
  • Do you believe that hope and optimism are “contagious”?
  • What is your dream for your future self?  What will you have to do to achieve that goal?
