Happy New Year

During 2020 and 2021 we’ve collectively been met with global challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent variants of the virus. These times have tested us in ways beyond compare. Despite the difficulties, our community has continued to strive. Let’s welcome 2022 with boundless hope, limitless optimism and unwavering commitment to ourselves, families, school and community. When we work to overcome adversity, it is more manageable with the help and support of our family and friends. Together, lets strive to keep our students, staff and community healthy by continuing to follow the health and safety guidelines:

  • hand washing
  • mask wearing
  • getting vaccinated
  • staying home when sick

Additionally, reducing screen time and engaging in other activities as a family such as board games, book reading, outdoor activities, or good old conversation and lastly, getting a good night’s rest for a healthy body and mind. These simple things keep us healthy inside and out while modeling good habits for your children.

Happy New Year!! May 2022 be a successful year filled with good health, happiness and prosperity for us all.

Sincerely,

Lisa Pilson

Principal

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. ~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Student Covid – 19 Vaccination Status Option

You may wish to voluntarily share your child’s COVID-19 vaccination information with Annandale Terrace ES. However, we do not require your child’s vaccination information and no school employee will ask for your child’s vaccination status. The only exception is student-athletes, who are required to share their vaccination status to participate in their sport or activity.

If you would like to provide us with your child’s vaccination status, please bring your child’s COVID-19 vaccination card or a photocopy of the card to our student registrar, Mr. Vega, in the main office. COVID-19 vaccination documentation contains Protected Health Information and should not be emailed. As always, you are welcome to contact us if you have any questions.

Honoring upcoming Holidays and Religious/Cultural Celebrations

January 6th - Three Kings Day

Happy Three Kings Day to those in our community who celebrate! Three Kings Day (January 6), also known as the Epiphany, is a Christian celebration that commemorates the Biblical story of the three kings who followed the star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Christ child. This marks the official 12th day of Christmas. FCPS has designated Three Kings Day/Epiphany as a religious and cultural observance day designed to allow students the opportunity to miss school for observances not already designated as school holidays.

January 7th Orthodox Christmas

Merry Christmas wishes to our Orthodox families who celebrate! Many Orthodox Christians in the United States celebrate Christmas Day on or near January 7 in the Gregorian calendar. This date works to be December 25 in the Julian calendar, which pre-dates the Gregorian calendar. It is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, who is believed to be the son of God. This holiday differs from Christmas Day because it does not observe Pagan traditions, like waiting for gifts from Santa Claus and decorating a tree, instead it focuses on religious customs. FCPS has designated Orthodox Christmas as a religious and cultural observance day designed to allow students the opportunity to miss school for observances not already designated as school holidays.

School Year 2022-2023 Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program Information

Each year, rising kindergarteners and first graders have the opportunity to participate in DLI programs available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish offered at Bailey’s ES, Fort Hunt ES, Fox Mill ES, Great Falls ES, Kent Gardens ES, Lake Anne ES, Laurel Ridge ES, London Towne ES, Orange Hunt ES, Powell ES, Ravensworth ES, and Rose Hill ES through a county-wide lottery process. Online registration for this lottery process opens on January 24, 2022. Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County. A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required. Please be aware that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the DLI schools and a one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement.

In the DLI Program, children spend half of the day learning content (math, science, health, and language arts of the partner language) in a partner language. The other half of the day is spent learning in English focusing on English language arts and social studies. The instructional program follows the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies at each grade level. Students are able to connect the skills learned across both languages through the extensive use of manipulative and concrete hands-on activities.  A separate flyer for the details about 2022-23 Dual Language Immersion Registration Information will be sent home in Wednesday folder on January 5, 2022.
