Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Happy New Year to all of you and we hope this message finds your family healthy and well.  We hope you have enjoyed a few extra days to Winter Break!  I wonder if our White Out Wednesday that we would have had today brought us some luck?! And how appropriate that tomorrow's spirit day is Booth Stompin' Thursday!  Please be sure to read our construction updates since our Kiss and Ride area will look much different tomorrow.

We also ask for your support to make sure your child(ren) have at least two masks ready to go for school tomorrow.  Masks can easily get damp in these cold temperatures and we want our students feeling comfortable in class.  Placing extra masks in the backpack will help to make sure your child(ren) have a comfortable and good fitting mask all day.  Please don't forget that masks with ventilation exhalation valves are not approved in FCPS schools.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child's learning at Oak Hill!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Mask Guidance Reminder

Mask guidance has not changed.  Here is the October 25, 2021 guidance from the CDC on the types of recommended/not recommended masks. As a reminder, masks should be multi-layered and well fitted to one's face.  FCPS students and staff are not permitted to wear masks with exhalation valves/vents.

Construction Update

construction

You will notice some changes in the front of the school for walkers and kiss and ride students.  The construction fence has been moved further out into the parking lot to accommodate the new addition, removing access to the sidewalk.   The portion of the kiss and ride lane that parallels the school has also moved further out. Sturdy, orange barriers have been placed to block off the driving lane from the pedestrian walkway.  The entrance and exit to kiss and ride remains the same, but there will only be a single lane of traffic.  We ask for your patience as there will be no passing lane with the new design.

Successful Food Drive

Food Drive

Thank you to all of our students and families who donated to the SCA food drive in December.  We were able to donate 1100 pounds of food to Cornerstones to help families in need.  We are so proud to be part of a community that is so generous.

Spirit Week

Boot Stompin' Thursday - Wear cowboy boots, dress boots or snow boots!
Flannel Friday - Wear your coziest winter flannel

Epiphany/Three Kings Day and Orthodox Christmas

Three Kings Day/Epiphany

Three Kings Day (January 6), also known as the Epiphany, is a Christian celebration that commemorates the Biblical story of the three kings who followed the star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Christ child. This marks the official 12th day of Christmas.  We wish all who celebrate a happy Three Kings Day!

Orthodox Christmas

Many Orthodox Christians in the United States celebrate Christmas Day on or near January 7 in the Gregorian calendar.  Merry Christmas wishes to our Orthodox families who celebrate!

The Importance of Submitting Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications

School meals provide nourishment that allows students to excel in the classroom and to grow and thrive. This year, FCPS continues to offer no-cost meals to all students, thanks to a waiver granted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

While the meals are no cost for all, it is still important for families to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FRM) application because it impacts much more than meals.

FRM applications help link families to other benefits, such as waiving fees for SAT, ACT, and AP exams as well as other school fee-based programs. Qualifying students may also have access to scholarships, classes, or services provided by agencies and organizations outside FCPS.

Find out more on the FCPS website.

Vaccination Status

You may wish to voluntarily share your child’s COVID-19 vaccination information with Oak Hill ES. However, we do not require your child’s vaccination information and no school employee will ask for your child’s vaccination status.

If you would like to provide us with your child’s vaccination status, please bring your child’s COVID-19 vaccination card or a photocopy of the card to Katherine Dillard, our registrar.   COVID-19 vaccination documentation contains Protected Health Information and should not be emailed.  Please call the office at 703-467-3500 if you have questions.

Get Your Child’s Online Activity Report

FCPS has new tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families

You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours.

Find out more and sign up for these services on the FCPS website.
