Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

To support student and staff wellness and allow for all to have a restful winter break, teachers will not issue homework that students must complete over break. Specifically, homework or projects will not be due on the two school days following this extended break. This does not preclude teachers from assigning long-range assignments in the weeks before a break and tasking students to use their own time management skills to determine if they need to work during their holiday.

Also, FCPS has new tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. Find out more and sign up for these services on the FCPS website.

Please join the Reston District Commanders on December 13 from 6-8.  Captain Rex Pagerie and Lt. Marc Mitchell will be on hand to talk about the Reston District trends, programs and answering questions.

They do not have an agenda, or a speech planned, they will be talking with the community over coffee at Langston Hughes Middle School in the Cafeteria.

Please share with your neighbors – all are welcome to attend.

Assistant Principal and Director of Student Services Messages

Parents/caregivers:  Langston Hughes MS is an “Away for the Day” school.  Students are asked to keep their phones and any headphones or ear buds in their pockets, backpack, or locker at all times.  The exception to this policy is during lunches where they are welcome to use their devices while in the cafeteria.  Phones should definitely not be used in the bathrooms, and teachers have been advised that they should have students leave phones in a secure spot in the classroom if they leave to use the restroom.  If students need to contact a parent/caregiver during the day, they are asked to go to the main office to do so.

Transportation to and From School:

Most Hughes students have an assigned FCPS school bus to safely transport them to and from their schoolday.  Please reinforce with your student that they should ride their assigned bus each day.  While the Reston Connector issues free passes to students, this is not intended to be used as the primary means of transportation for students who have an FCPS schoolbus.  Students have been reminded that their behavior on the schoolbus should align with the expectations set forth in the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities which was recently reviewed with all students during their social studies classes.

AVID Recruitment begins in elementary schools after winter break

This is just information for parents who may have rising 7th grade students. We are looking for AVID students for the 2022-2023 7th grade class. AVID students are typically students achieving in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support.  These students often are not realizing their full potential academically.  In the identification process a number of criteria are considered, including:

  • 0+ GPA (some 2’s, but mostly 3’s and 4’s on elementary report card)
  • Positive behavior and leadership potential
  • Good attendance record
  • Demonstrates desire and determination to achieve academically and prepare for college
  • Strong possibility to be first in the family to attend college
  • Member of group that is historically underrepresented in 4-year colleges/universities
  • Economically-disadvantaged
  • Other special circumstances

If this sounds like your student, then you may want to consider applying to AVID! Students must apply to be enrolled in the AVID elective.  Students must complete an application and interview. After completing the application, they will be interviewed in person at their elementary school by an LHMS AVID Site Team member. The application is due January 12th.

Please contact your student’s elementary school teacher and/or school counselor if you need assistance or have questions.

AVID Recruitment for rising 8th graders at LHMS will begin in February…stay tuned for that information.
