Glasgow Community Gazette - December 5

Powell

Glasgow Community:

I hope that everyone had a wonderful return week after Thanksgiving Break.  This week our very own Denise Fields, math teacher, was featured on a FCPS teacher panel for Fox 5. Check out Ms. Fields speak about how students are collaborating this year. Check out the clip here! Also, please view the last PTA Meeting that covered Dr. Oladimeji’s presentation explaining the IB Middle Years Program at Glasgow. As winter break approaches, we will be entering the halfway mark for the second quarter.  This will be a good benchmark to check in with your child and their teachers on how they are doing in school.  We are here to support you and our students, so please feel free to reach out to teachers, counselors and administrators if you have any concerns.

Starting this week, students may obtain COVID-19 diagnostic testing at six drive-through sites in Fairfax County. Diagnostic testing is provided for anyone who has symptoms or is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. COVID-19 testing helps us reduce the virus’ spread and keep our schools safe places for all students to learn. I encourage you to utilize our new diagnostic testing services as needed. Last week we only had 1 positive COVID case.

Appointments are not required for diagnostic testing but families must register in the secure online portal. When you register and provide consent for your child to be tested, they will also be added to Glasgow MS screening testing pool. If you do not wish for them to be part of the weekly screening testing pool, simply log back into the online portal after your child’s test is complete and withdraw consent. More information about diagnostic and screening testing, including site locations and schedules, is available on our website

Happy Bodhi Day to those in the Glasgow MS community who celebrate! Bodhi Day is a Buddhist holiday that recognizes the day that Buddha achieved enlightenment through meditation under the Bodhi tree. Computer Science is more than coding & programming: it's critical thinking and creating! For Computer Science Education Week, see the #compsci opportunities & resources available to FCPS students: https://bit.ly/fcpsCompSci. Also, we were super excited to see our Chamber Orchestra students perform at the School Board Meeting on Thursday! See the picture below!

As always, please let me know if you would like a Home Visit from the principal and if you have any questions. We are here to support.

Humbly,
Victor L. Powell, Principal

Flexible Instructional Time: Glasgow’s Flexible Instructional Time (FIT) is the school intervention block that takes place during 4th period. At Glasgow, students may be placed into an intervention FIT course, a literacy-based enrichment FIT course, or a specialty FIT course. Student placements are based on data such as academic assessments, teacher recommendations, and testing history. FIT rosters were uploaded into SIS mid November and FIT is graded pass/fail. FIT began on Tuesday, November 30th. FIT takes place every other 4th period, alternating with Panther Time. For questions related to your child’s FIT class, please contact your child’s school counselor.

Student Prayer: Per FCPS Policy, Glasgow provides accommodations for students who request time and space during the school day for prayer. Supervised prayer time will take place at Glasgow from 2:05pm to 2:15pm in the Lecture Hall. Because this takes place during instructional hours, students will be responsible to turn in assignments and make up missing work in a timely manner. Please note the following:

  • Students will only be permitted to leave class at 2:05pm if they have a pass to pray. Students must secure these passes in advance from student services. Teachers are not able to issue passes to students.
  • Glasgow does not provide prayer rugs or hijabs.
  • Students are expected to follow all school rules and expectations for conduct during their transition to prayer, during prayer, and at afternoon dismissal.
  • Students are expected to follow all school rules and expectations for conduct during their transition to prayer, during prayer, and at afternoon dismissal. Failure to follow school rules and expectations may result in consequences per FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities.
