Glasgow Community Gazette - November 21

Powell

Glasgow Community:

From our Glasgow Middle family to yours, have a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Classes will resume on Monday, Nov. 29, 2021. #OurFCPS My family will be traveling to Louisville Kentucky to visit with family during the holidays, so I hope everyone has a great time with family and friends! Also, National Special Education Day is recognized each year on Dec. 2 and commemorates President Gerald Ford’s signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1975.

COVID-19 Screening Testing Reminder: Parents and guardians can use the secure online portal to register their child(ren). If you do not want your child to participate, no action is required. You will have the option to update your child’s vaccination status and/or withdraw consent for testing anytime. Student-athletes do not need to pre-register with the LTS online portal for screening testing, they will use a separate portal provided by their school’s student activities director.

There will be no student COVID-19 screening testing the week of November 22 due to the Thanksgiving break. For more information on student COVID-19 testing, visit the FCPS website

Also, continue to reach out to me if you would like me to visit you through a Home Visit. This past weekend I was able to connect with more families. Please see below. Please continue to reach out to our team if you have any questions.

Humbly,
Victor L. Powell, Principal

Important Information

Personal Project Showcase: The Glasgow MS library proudly presents the Personal Project Showcase. On November 22, Glasgow Scholars and AVID 6 students will present their Personal Projects in an Open House format.  Projects will be set up around the library, and students will present their information to small groups of students/adults.  We are hoping for authentic audiences for the presenters. Please sign up for a time slot on our SignUP Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084FA9A72EA0FE3-personal

Glasgow Counseling - Fall Advisory Council: The School Counseling Team will be holding its Fall Advisory Council virtually on December 2nd from 9:15am-10.  The purpose of the Advisory Council is to provide support, feedback and recommendations for the school counseling team.  As a team, we serve the entire school, and we will be seeking student, parent/family, staff and community members to serve on our advisory council.  Of critical importance is for us to have diverse voices that represent our wider school community. If you are interested in serving on our Advisory Council, please contact Emily Wasserman (ebwasserman@fcps.edu) to express your interest.

Student Prayer: Per FCPS Policy, Glasgow provides accommodations for students who request time and space during the school day for prayer. Students may come to the library to pray in designated areas during the last 10 minutes of their lunch time. Students interested in going to the library for prayer can come to student services to pick up a pass. See FCPS guidelines here. *Update* We are currently looking at a potential revision to the school policy in order to accommodate additional considerations of students of certain faiths. We will send any updates through upcoming Gazettes.

Flexible Instructional Time: Glasgow’s Flexible Instructional Time (FIT) is the school intervention block that takes place during 4th period. At Glasgow, students may be placed into an intervention FIT course, a literacy-based enrichment FIT course, or a specialty FIT course. Student placements are based on data such as academic assessments, teacher recommendations, and testing history. FIT rosters will be uploaded into SIS mid November and FIT is graded pass/fail. FIT will begin on Tuesday, November 30th. FIT will be taking place every other 4th period, alternating with Panther Time. For questions related to your child’s FIT class, please contact your child’s school counselor.

Save the Date - Glasgow Curriculum Night: Glasgow’s Curriculum Night will take place on Thursday, January 20th. Curriculum night is primarily for rising 6th graders and students new to Glasgow and their families in order to learn about course offerings and programs at Glasgow for the 2022-2023 school year. More information to come!

High School Curriculum Nights: Rising 9th graders are invited to attend curriculum nights for their respective high schools. Here are the current dates, but check each school’s website as dates may change

Lost and Found

If your child is missing something have them check the stage in the cafeteria. We’ve set out a few bins of lost and found items.

Donations Accepted for Glasgow’s Brain Break Time

As you may know, all Glasgow students participate in a 20 minute Brain Break during every 4th period class. With hundreds of students playing outdoors during this time, teachers who supervise Brain Breaks have requested additional sporting equipment to help provide students opportunities for structured play. We are accepting donations of equipment such as soccer balls, footballs, and basketballs that can be made available to students and teachers during their brain breaks. Please drop off donations to the front office. Thank you for your support!
