Principal's Newsletter - English

Greetings, Glen Forest Families!

We hope this newsletter finds you and your family well.  Please know that our school community is thriving!  Heading into the 2nd quarter, your child’s teacher(s) have been busy digging into student progress data and are strategically planning how to move each one forward.  Thank you for the support you provide for your child’s education because you are an important part.  We look forward to the day when we are back to “normal” so that we can invite you in to see all of the wonderful teaching and learning happening here at GFES!  In the meantime, reach out to your child’s teacher with questions and initiate conversations with your children in the evenings.  Here are some ideas to get the conversation going:

What did you learn today?  What are you finding difficult?  What subject do you feel confident in?  How are your relationships with your teachers and classmates going?

Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or compliments at dlherndonwi1@fcps.edu.  Goooo Eagles!  #GFeaglessoar

Educationally yours,

Diane “Dee Dee” Herndon-Wilson, Proud Principal

Bus Behavior Update

We are continuing to work with our students about safe and appropriate bus behavior.  Unfortunately, we are receiving numerous violation referrals, such as standing up while the bus is in motion, inappropriate language, and unnecessary physical contact.  We want our eagles to be the best they can be and we ask for your help.  Please review with your children the importance of staying seated, keeping hands and feet to yourself, and using appropriate language.  After Thanksgiving Break, all students will have assigned seats to better support safety.  If a student cannot remain safe, a temporary suspension from the bus is possible.  In this case, the parent would need to transport the student to and from school.  Thank you so much for your support.  We are a team!

Thanksgiving Break

In honor of the Thanksgiving Break, there will be no school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, November 24, 25 and 26.  School will resume on Monday, November 29.  From our school to your homes, we wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Did you Know?????

There is a way for parents to check on their child’s school progress and attendance with just one click on your computer?  Yes and it’s super easy!   Please check out this short video on all the benefits from having a Parent Vue account.   Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLwkkemipws

I would like to encourage you to create a Parent Vue account today if you have not already done so.  If you need assistance in doing this, please call the main office at 703-578-8000.  This is an excellent way to keep the parent-school partnership strong.

Student Covid Vaccine

Beginning Tuesday, November 16, the Fairfax Health District and FCPS will offer the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, at ten clinics located at schools across Fairfax County. All children are welcome, and a parent or responsible adult must accompany them. We are encouraging parents to get their children vaccinated as a way to keep our schools open and safe as we come out of the pandemic. The COVID-19 vaccine is safe, effective, and free.

The Fairfax County Health Department’s webpage has information about the clinics and resources for finding and scheduling a vaccine appointment. Up-to-date information about vaccination opportunities is available on our website.

Find out if you can schedule your child’s COVID-19 and flu vaccines at the same time.

Local pediatricians share their advice for children with underlying health concerns, and if your child can get the flu shot at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine in this short video.

Student Covid Testing

Pre-registration for optional COVID-19 screening testing for students began last week. Parents and guardians may pre-register their child(ren)and provide consent using the LTS secure online portal. If you do not want your child to participate in COVID-19 screening testing, no action is required. You will have the option each week to update your child’s vaccination status and consent for testing.
