Floris Families,

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break. There were lots of smiles on Monday morning as we returned to the building from the break.

Hanukkah began at sundown on Sunday, November 28. We wish Hanukkah Sameach (happy Hanukkah) to all who celebrate the festival of lights.

On Tuesday evening, Ms. Walker joined several other principals to accept a donation from Asha-Jyothi (AJ). AJ is a volunteer based non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the underprivileged by providing access to education and healthcare. Floris received the donation because a few Floris families registered for the 13th Annual 5K Run/Walk. Next year's 5KRun/Walk is scheduled for Sunday, September 18th at Fairfax Corner.

The Floris PTA spirit wear arrived this week. If you ordered, your items should have come home this week with your child. It is so fun to have new spirit wear to enjoy!

Next Wednesday, FCPS will be observing Bodhi Day. A blessed Bodhi Day to all who celebrate.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Holly Walker, Principal, hjwalker@fcps.edu

Amanda Dorr, Assistant Principal, acdorr@fcps.edu

Positivity Project

 Bravery (Dec.6-10)

What does Bravery mean? You act with mental, moral, or physical strength even when you know things are difficult or scary. Bravery refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgement; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting.

Why does it matter? Overcoming fears is critically important in individual development, as it allows the person to do more and become more. A person can be brave every single day. On a physical level, bravery allows us to overcome fears such as swimming or playing a sport. And on a moral level, doing what we know to be right, despite the risks, gives us the sense that we are acting on behalf of a larger purpose.

Bravery Quote of the Week: “I learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” - Nelson Mandela

Floris's Annual Giving Tree

Please consider participating in Floris's Annual Giving Tree!  As a school community, we recognize the hardships many families are facing right now and will once again be “adopting” local families for the holiday season. If your family is able to "adopt" a family, please sign up for a gift card slot here (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0D49A4AB2A1-floris1).

We ask that all gift cards be:

  • Mailed to Floris (Attn: Sarah de Kramer, 2708 Centreville Road Herndon, VA 20171) to arrive by Dec. 14
  • Dropped off at Door 1 (supervised box) on Dec. 14 between 10:00am- 3:00pm.

Thank you for your continued generosity.

If you know of a family in need, please email Sarah de Kramer at shdekramer@fcps.edu

Level IV AAP Parent Referrals

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to Amy Albanese at abalbanese@fcps.edu  by no later than December 15.

The window to submit an AAP Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they are submitted to the central selection committee by emailing Amy Albanese, abalbanese@fcps.edu. Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.

For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our fall parent information meetings at Floris Elementary.

You can also find information and the presentations from Ms. Albanese at  the Floris AAP Website.

FCPS will not accept any late referrals after December 15.
