Greetings,

The Rachel Carson Middle School staff wishes a very Happy Thanksgiving to the entire RCMS community.  We are thankful for each of our students and the energy and creativity that they bring to school on a daily basis. We really appreciate the opportunity to see, interact with and teach our students in the in-person setting on a daily basis. Furthermore, we are also very grateful for all of our families. The support that you provide for our students and staff is tremendous and very much appreciated.  We hope that you enjoy a safe and festive holiday.

Principal

Happy Thanksgiving

Safety in Kiss N Ride Drop-off

As safety is our top priority, please remember to drop students off in the Kiss n Ride loop in the morning.  We’ve learned that a number of students are being dropped off in the morning along McLearen Road or the sidewalks along the school entrance.  These actions place our students in a less secure position during arrival.

If using Kiss n Ride, please drop off students upon reaching the sidewalks closest to the cafeteria.  Additionally, students who participate in after school programs should also be picked-up in the Kiss N Ride loop and not at another location on or off campus.

Wellness Screening - 7th Grade Only

RCMS Clinical Team is conducting an ACT Wellness Screening on November 29th and 30th  during Health/PE classes as part of the Signs of Suicide (SOS) ® Prevention Program for all 7th grade students.  The program has proven to be successful at increasing help-seeking behaviors by students concerned about themselves or a friend.

We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for depression, suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. Additionally, this parent information video provides key information about the SOS program itself.

On Reporting Absences

If a student will be absent or arriving late to school, parents or guardians should always report the details of the absence to the RCMS Attendance Office. Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is imperative that parents contact the attendance office (instead of, or in addition to, the teacher) when their child is absent so we can mark them correctly.

To report an absence, parents have these options:

  1. Use the link to our online attendance form (preferred) from the main page of the RCMS website:
  2. Send an email with full details to: CarsonMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu, or
  3. Call the attendance line at 703-925-3636 being sure to include the spelling of your student’s last name and reason for the absence.

If your student will be picked up early for an appointment:
Please send them to the front office in the morning with a note stating the time of the dismissal.
Students will be given a pass to leave class and meet parents in the office. Parents should come to entrance #1, to the main office, with a photo ID to pick up their student for early dismissals.

For more information on the attendance policies, please visit the RCMS Attendance page.
