Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
On behalf of the whole staff we would like to wish the community a Happy Thanksgiving and a joyful and peaceful break.
When students return, we’re excited to share a new learning opportunity set to begin on Monday, November 29th. Students will remain in their 3rd period “Connections” class each Blue Day with their current 3rd period teacher. During this 90-minute block, students will focus on social-emotional learning, executive functioning skills like organization and time management, and intervention/enrichment for math and reading. Students will practice math and reading skills through two adaptive computer programs - Mathspace and Lexia PowerUp. Both programs are designed to meet students at the level they are currently working and are capable of going beyond 8th grade skills for those who need it. Parents are invited to learn more about these two programs at https://mathspace.co/us and https://www.lexialearning.com/why-lexia/. We have a limited number of school headphones for students to use with these programs. If you are able to provide your student with a set of wired headphones for the computer, please do so.

Panther Parent/Caregiver Academy, Session #3: School and County Resources to Support Your Child’s Success in Middle School
Please join assistant principal, Amy Smith, and representatives from counseling/clinical staff, after school programs, AVID, and safety & security to learn about the wealth of resources and people available to support your student’s complete middle school experience.
The session will be held from 6:30-7:30 in the LHMS library. Please sign up at Parent Academy Sign Up.
Transportation to and From School:
Most Hughes students have an assigned FCPS school bus to safely transport them to and from their schoolday. Please reinforce with your student that they should ride their assigned bus each day. While the Reston Connector issues free passes to students, this is not intended to be used as the primary means of transportation for students who have an FCPS schoolbus. Students have been reminded that their behavior on the schoolbus should align with the expectations set forth in the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities which was recently reviewed with all students during their social studies classes.
