1.  From the Principal's Desk

Dear Members of the CHS Community:

Happy Friday. The pandemic has clearly impacted some students in a myriad of ways, and the teachers and staff are working proactively to link students in need with academic, social, and emotional supports and assistance. During June, July, and August , we ran perhaps the largest summer program in the history of Chantilly HS. Next, we learned that the American Recovery Act (ARA) would be providing school systems across the United States with an unprecedented infusion of financial assistance. A team of teachers, administrators, and support staff began working to develop a comprehensive plan to figure out how to best meet the needs of our students using ARA funds. Below is a brief overview of our plans related to academics. I will go over our plans related to meeting the social and emotional needs of students in an upcoming message.

Academic Intervention and Workload/Stress Reduction—Charger Time

  • Available to all students in all subjects
  • Occurs on A days typically twice a week during the school day
  • Students can complete make ups or get help from any teacher
  • Students that have D or F grades are required to get help
  • Students without academic challenges or make-up work are provided free time

Academic Intervention Program – HW Club

  • After school tutoring sessions with teacher and peer tutors
  • Available to ALL CHS students
  • Support offered in all core subjects including world languages
  • Sessions run every Monday and Thursday (excluding holidays and early releases) from 3:00 – 4:30pm
    • Late busses depart school at 4:40pm
  • Students/Families can view available subjects and tutoring locations via this QR code (Also posted all around school)
    • Students may report directly to the room location following the final bell of the school day.

Academic Intervention Program—Reading Inventory Assessment

  • The goal was to figure out which students are reading above, at, or below grade level
  • 9th and 10 grade student were tested
  • Students reading below grade level are being linked with support to boost their literacy skills

Academic Intervention—Additional Instructional Tools

  • Software programs that include Padlet, EdPuzzle, PearDeck,  Newsela, and iLIT for English Language Learners
  • Additional student laptops

Academic Intervention—Additional Training and Planning Time for Teachers

  • Orton-Gillingham training to improve student literacy
  • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) training
  • Collaboration time for Collaborative Learning Teams (teachers of like subjects)

I hope this provides you a better sense of how and what we are doing to help CHS students. Have a good weekend.

Scott

4.  Recognitions

Varsity Football lost to Centreville 25-42 in the First Round of the Region Playoffs.  The Chargers persevered last week through a number of challenges and played an exciting game.  Congratulations to the players and coaches on a great game and season.

5.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I plan to meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Asira Abu-Ageel came in late to French 1 but quickly learned the pace of language acquisition and models an exceptional learning style. She participates in class and helps her fellow classmates. She is a joy to have in the class.  Ms. JoEllen Delamatta
  • Anthony (Tony) Angulo is a valuable and knowledgeable member of the Vet Science 2 class. He enthusiastically participates in all activities and even took point on teaching a classmate how to properly feed Kizzy the milk snake. Tony's calm, confident instruction helped a nervous first-time snake feeder successfully accomplish the task.  Ms. Wendy Lawson
  • Shahnaz Hakemi's outgoing, friendly personality along with her incredible work ethic and leadership is recognized each day she spends in Cosmetology. She brightens the room for everyone and is moving forward outside the classroom, as well.  Mr. Wayne White
  • Nicholas (Nick) Hope has advanced quickly through the programming curriculum. His projects are creative and well organized. He works daily with classmates to help them troubleshoot their projects or get caught up on their exercises. He is an excellent student.  Mr. Matt Keel
  • Storm Peters is doing very well in Accounting this year. She does a great job of taking ownership of her learning. Keep up the good work!  Ms. Catherine Casares
  • Mary Powers is on her academic game! In AVID, I see Mary apply critical thinking, organization, and writing strategies to a number of her classes with fantastic tutorial questions and participation. One of her developing superpowers is focused note taking where she is processing and reflecting on her learning daily.  Ms. Karen Molloy
  • Ari Ratliff asks insightful questions with poise and maturity as he makes connections with the different concepts in Cybersecurity Fundamentals. His interest in cybersecurity is obvious with his diligence in class.  Ms. Cynthia Belsky
  • I am nominating Karissa Raucheisen for her recent successes in Criminal Justice. Karissa shows a real desire to work in the Criminal Justice field and is extremely motivated to achieve that goal. She is always willing to take on extra tasks and is always quick to assist with activities during class. I know Karissa is involved with after school clubs as well as sports and she maintains a 98% average in my class. I am glad to nominate her for some well-deserved recognition.  Mr. Phillip Leger
  • I am thrilled to have this opportunity to recognize David Rodriguez’s efforts in Engineering Drawing this year. He is very conscientious and has been working really hard to successfully complete all of his assignments. He is also very helpful to other students and demonstrates that he knows what he is doing by teaching others in the class what to do. Keep up the good work, David and thanks for bringing positive energy to our class!  Ms. Sue Chudovan
  • Maina Yedla has demonstrated commitment and creativity in Marketing 1 class. She has grown as a student over the past year and should be super proud. Maina is well organized, communicates effectively, and has a deep understanding of marketing topics illustrated in her assignments. She also is competing in the DECA Leadership Conference and has reached out with questions throughout her preparation. It is exciting to see Maina excel this year in Marketing 1 class.  Ms. Jennifer Piotrowski
