Terra Centre Updates 11/19/2021

Thanksgiving

Terra Centre Families,

During this time of Thanksgiving, we want to share our gratitude and thank you for being such an important part of your children’s lives. This is a wonderful time of the year to get together with friends and family to celebrate.

Our students have been working very hard during the second quarter and we have reminded all teachers to not assign any homework during this holiday break so that our students and staff have this time to enjoy the holiday, rest, and recharge!

As a reminder, we are only in school on Monday and Tuesday of next week.  School is closed Wednesday through Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

On behalf of the Terra Centre staff, we wish everyone a safe and joyful Thanksgiving!

When we return, our book fair will be in full swing! Please scroll below for school, PTA, and community information, as well as pictures from our SCA spirit day.

Enjoy your weekend!

Reminder:  Window for AAP Level IV (full-time) Referrals to Close December 15, 2021

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to MCJewell@fcps.edu no later than December 15

The window to submit an AAP Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they are submitted to the central selection committee by emailing Melanie Jewell at MCJewell@fcps.edu. Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.

For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our fall parent information meetings at Terra Centre.

No appointment is necessary, and all vaccinations are free. For locations and clinic hours, click here. The health department website has information about other options for children’s COVID-19 vaccination. #VaxUP

Local pediatricians share their advice for children with underlying health concerns, and if your child can get the flu shot at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine in this short video.

Scholastic Book Fair

We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. This event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading.  As always, all purchases benefit our school library.  We appreciate your support throughout the years! After missing out on many beloved traditions, our fall Book Fair will be a familiar, welcome, and safe event for our students. Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from Monday, November 29, 2021 through Friday, December 3, 2021 in-person at Terra Centre Elementary!

  • Our book fair website is: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/tctigers. You can find out more information about the fair, set up an eWallet account, sign up to volunteer, or even shop online starting from this site! More information about each of those things below!
  • Book Fair Previews/Wishlists- On either Tues., Nov. 23 or Mon., Nov. 29, all students will get a chance to preview the Fair with their classroom teacher and make a wishlist of items they’re interested in. They will bring this list home to share some of the titles they would like to read!
  • Prefer to shop together as a family? Book Fair Family Night will take place on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 from 5:00-6:30pm. Unlike previous years, the fair will be spread out to multiple locations within the school during this evening event to allow for greater social distancing. Masks will be required for all students and adults.  For adults shopping the fair, we accept eWallet, cash, credit cards, and personal checks made out to Terra Centre ES.
  • Prefer that students shop during the school day? Students can use eWallet or cash to make purchases at school, at a time convenient to their classroom teacher (ie. Before school starts, during a break, when they finish work, etc.) The fair will be open from 8:15am – 4:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, as well as on Friday from 8:15 am - 12 noon. For students shopping the fair alone during the school day, we accept eWallet and cash payments.
  • Prefer to shop at home? Shop online at our school’s Virtual Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home (there is no option to buy online and pick up at school), and shipping is free for all-book orders over $25. Start at our Book Fair website: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/tctigers.
  • Want to gift a book to your child’s teacher? There will be a display at the in-person Fair with a slot for each teacher and specialist at TC that they will fill with “book wishes,” which are slips of paper listing books from the Fair that they would love to add to their classroom library or use for a lesson. This is a great way to honor a favorite teacher!
  • What is Scholastic eWallet? Our Book Fair offers a cash-free payment option called eWallet. It’s a convenient digital account that your child can use for shopping at our Fair. Grandparents, friends, and others can contribute, too! This is our preferred method, as we can easily pull it up on our cash registers by student name! Start at our Book Fair website: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/tctigers.
  • Are you able to help at our Book Fair? We need adult volunteers to help the Scholastic Book Fair run smoothly. We’re looking for volunteers to help students both during the school day AND during our family night event. Please click on the following link to access our virtual sign-up sheet: https://volunteer.scholastic.com/#/signup/BgiDCm7ut or click the volunteer link on our Book Fair website: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/tctigers. Thank you!

I am so excited for this exciting time of year!  See you at the Book Fair!
