Spring Hill ES Panther Press

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Spring Hill Families,

We are off to a great start with Reflex Math. Please ask your child if he/she has access and can log in. You may click here to access individual accounts. As a reminder, this program is available to 2-6 grade students.

Next week is Spirit Week. Please see below for Spirit Week day themes.

Last, I would like to invite all of you to our November 19th PTO/parent university meeting. We will be discussing internet safety. Online safety is such an important topic in today's world, and it's constantly changing. Staying on top of it is crucial for our children's health and safety.

      Have a wonderful weekend!

Spirit Week

Optional COVID-19 Screening

Optional COVID-19 screening testing will begin the week of November 15 for students who are not fully vaccinated. FCPS is partnering with LongView International Technology Solutions, Inc. (LTS) to provide testing services for students.

Optional screening testing for Spring Hill students will take place on Mondays from 9:00 – 11:30 AM at Spring Hill. Staff at our school will work with all students to ensure they are scheduled to access COVID testing with LTS during the timeframe they are scheduled to be at our school.

One-time parent/legal guardian consent is required to begin COVID screening testing for a student to be tested at school. You may withdraw your consent for testing at any time. If you want your child to begin participating in COVID-19 screening testing, you must pre-register your child(ren) and provide consent using the LTS secure online portal. If you do not want your child to participate in COVID-19 screening testing, no action is required. You will have the option each week to update your child’s vaccination and consent for testing.

For all the details about optional COVID-19 screening testing, visit the FCPS website and review the FCPS COVID-19 Screening Testing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document.

If you have questions about how testing will be conducted here at Spring Hill please contact Miryam Mailk at (703) 506-3400 or mmalik@fcps.edu

Screening testing is a recommended layered prevention strategy that keeps Spring Hill safe for in-person learning. Thank you for considering enrolling your child.

Students, Families Encouraged to Participate in Walking Wednesdays

Students and families are being encouraged to take part in monthly Walking Wednesdays during the 2021-22 school year to help promote mental and physical health. The Safe Routes to School office will be promoting Walking Wednesdays throughout the year, with a different theme each month.

Walking Wednesdays will provide a boost of energy for students and an opportunity for neighbors to greet each other and reconnect at a safe social distance along with physical benefits.

Walking Wednesdays are a county-wide initiative in partnership with the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Move Your Way and Healthy Strides campaigns. Inova Fairfax and the Partnership for a Healthier Fairfax also support the campaign.

Dining Assistant Needed

We are looking for a part-time person to serve as our dining assistant. This is an hourly position who would assist students during their lunch time, supervises student clean-up, keeps order and dismisses students to their teachers. This is a great opportunity for a parent who would like to see their child throughout their school day!

Family Life Education

Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in kindergarten through grade 3 participate in an emotional and social health unit.

Students in grades 4-6 will  receive instruction in a Human Growth and Development and emotional and social health. Human Growth & Development lessons will take place the week of December 13th.

For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions here

In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons are available for review in multiple locations.

  • Online in Schoology - includes lessons and media titles that FCPS has streaming rights. Any additional media or book titles that are not streamed are available at your child’s school library.
  • Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.

You are invited to attend an evening opportunity to preview the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 30th,  5:30-6:15pm on Zoom.   Click this link  to access the Zoom meeting.  Once on Zoom, the meeting code is 924 5476 3370.  All program materials and media for all grade levels will be available for your review at this time.

Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out the form provided to you in your child’s orientation packet at the beginning of the school year or you may access the opt out forms online here.  If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form. Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify the school in writing before instruction begins.

If you have any questions, please feel free to connect with Amy Briggs,  Assistant Principal at arbriggs@fcps.edu

Testing Reminders

Grades 1-2 fall iReady scores are now available for families in SIS ParentVue. Results for grades 3-6 students will be published the week of November 29.

Positivity Project

Next week, our students will be learning about Gratitude. Having Gratitude means you are aware of and thankful for good things that happen. Gratitude is the quality of feeling and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world, and that we
have received that goodness. People with the strength of gratitude have a readiness to show appreciation for kindness and also to return kindness.

Bids for Kids and Fun Fair returns???

Maybe... But we need your help!

We're grateful that our students and staff have been able to operate in a safe and healthy manner this school year. In light of this, and given the recent availability of vaccines for children, we've decided to move ahead with planning for our two biggest fundraisers - Bids for Kids (BFK) and Fun Fair! Bids for Kids is our annual auction event. And for one Saturday in March, Fun Fair transforms our school into a carnival that brings our community together with games, raffles, face painting, prizes, delicious food, the cake walk and so much more! We know that students are eager to see these traditions return. BUT, we cannot move ahead without people willing to share their time and talents to help run, plan and execute these two events. Not sure you have the knowledge or time to do it? There's no need to reinvent the wheel - we have loads of knowledge and planning documents available from years of experience. Never been to either event before? Pair up with someone who has - the experience is always more fun when you have someone to share it with. If you would like to be a part of the committee or even chair either Bids for Kids or Fun Fair, please submit our VOLUNTEER FORM. Questions? Email our PTO President, Jennifer McCarthy.
