COVID 19 Vaccination and Testing Requirement for Student Athletes

16+   Vaccination Requirement

  • ALL STUDENT ATHLETES 16 and over must be vaccinated or have an exemption. Records for either must be submitted to kbberg@fcps.edu
  • Those with an exemption will need to be tested weekly beginning November 15th.
  • This requirement is effective Monday, November 4th.
  • They can begin tryouts with just their 1st dose. They will need to test weekly, starting the 15th, until they become fully vaccinated.

15 and under – Vaccination or Weekly Testing

  • ALL STUDENT ATHLETES 15 and under have a choice. Be vaccinated or submit to weekly testing.
  • Those that choose to submit to weekly testing will begin that process the week of November 15th
  • That all being said… they do not need to be tested or vaccinated before trying out the week of the 8th. However, they need to know that if they make the team, they will need to do either to remain eligible.

FCPS’ requirement for student-athletes to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or participate in weekly COVID-19 testing begins with the onset of the winter sports season. We will begin screening testing for student-athletes who are not fully vaccinated the week of November 15, not November 1 as previously planned.

Many student-athletes are currently in the middle of their two-dose cycle and additional time for testing to begin will allow those students to complete their vaccinations. Students are eligible to try out for their sport if they have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The adjustment will allow FCPS and its contractors time to ensure all components, including the portals are up and running and staff are fully trained.

In order to streamline the process for families who have to register multiple students, we’ve moved the start date for all student screening testing. We will share information about how to preregister and provide consent for COVID-19 testing through a secure online portal shortly.

For more details about FCPS COVID-19 screening testing, visit our website. Please contact [SCHOOL] for more information about how student-athlete screening testing will be conducted.

Proof of vaccination is provided by sending a copy of the student’s vaccination card to our head athletic trainer. Korey Berg at kbberg@fcps.edu . Copies can also be dropped off in the activities offices.

Medical exemptions must be submitted through a letter from the student’s doctor, on the doctor’s office letterhead, stating the student has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented health or medical reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test every week. To provide documentation of a medical exemption please send to Korey Berg at kbberg@fcps.edu or drop off in the activities office.

Religious exemptions must be submitted using the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption form and must be notarized. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to religious reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test every week. To provide documentation of a medical exemption please send to Korey Berg at kbberg@fcps.edu or drop off in the activities office.

Weekly testing will be required for unvaccinated students 12-15 and those who qualify for medical or religious exemptions. The test will need to be either a rapid test or a PCR test. Home testing using over-the-counter testing products will not be accepted.

For more information about the vaccination requirement for student-athletes, visit the FCPS website.
