Glasgow Community Gazette - October 31

Glasgow Community:

This weekend with my family was peaceful! I was able to hang out with my son and daughter on Saturday playing blocks and coloring. Life with a 2 and 5 year old! I love it! Sunday was spent sitting on a community panel in DC and hanging out with some of my friends in the DMV area. Also, trying to make sure I am taking care of my own Social and Emotional health, so that I can be at my best for my family and the school community.

We have successfully completed one quarter of the school year!  We were a little bummed that the Youth Night for the Justice HS vs Annandale game was so rainy, but there will be other opportunities for our communities to align and connect within events like that.

In November, there are a variety of observances that we know many families will be recognizing:

  • Nov. 1 & 2 - Dia de los Muertos / All Saints Day
  • Nov. 4 - Diwali (Regular School Day with Religious & Cultural Observance considerations during instruction)
  • Nov. 11 - Veterans Day (2-hour early release)
  • Nov. 24-26 - Thanksgiving (No School)

Please let us know if there is any additional support your student needs for any of these days.  Thank you to all those who came to our PTA meeting on Tuesday, 10/26. We did record it and here is the link. At the PTA meeting, there was a presentation given about grading at Glasgow MS by Mr. Chung (Director of Student Services) and Mrs. Griffin (Academic Dean & Instructional Coach).

Please remember that Monday and Tuesday, November 1 and 2, are teacher workdays. Please schedule time with your child’s teacher if you would like to gain more insight into their growth and progress within the first quarter. Our teachers are here to partner with you as parents. We hope you and your family enjoy the four-day weekend.  During the two workdays, teachers will be completing progress reports. We look forward to the beginning of the second quarter on November 3rd.

As you can see below, our staff had a great time dressing up this past Friday! We have such a great staff of people! It was good to dress up like Cookie Monster and bring around cookies to staff! Also, it has been great getting out to our Brain Breaks on the field, basketball courts and court yard during Panther Time and connecting with these 3 young ladies below! We are so proud of our librarians who continue to make their space the center of our school within literacy and a love for books! As always, if you have any questions, please connect with me or the appropriate personnel.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

Important Information

COVID Testing for Students: In support of our commitment to safety, Glasgow will begin optional COVID-19 screening testing students the week of November 15. Routine testing is a highly recommended strategy to reduce COVID-19 transmission and keep our schools safe. Following recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 10% of students who are not fully vaccinated and have parent/guardian consent will be randomly selected for weekly testing. Parent/guardian consent is required for students to be part of the testing pool. We will share more information about how to submit your child(ren)’s vaccination status and opt in to testing soon. Test results will be kept confidential. Parents/guardians will be able to review results through the secure vendor portal. Parents/guardians may select an option to share their child’s test results with FCPS. Sharing results with FCPS is optional. More information about COVID-19 testing in FCPS can be found on the FCPS website. As always, we encourage you to contact the school if you have any questions or concerns.

VaxUp FCPS: Tuesday’s news that an FDA panel has recommended Pfizer’s low dose vaccine for children ages 5-11 brings hope that we can add another layer of prevention for children during this pandemic. As we await a final decision, please know that Fairfax County Public Schools and our community partners including the Fairfax County Health Department, Inova Health System, and local pediatric groups, are working together to ensure that every family who wishes to vaccinate their children ages 5-11 will have access to the vaccine. For the latest information on our vaccination rollout plans, visit our website.

Community Review of K-8 Science Basal Instructional Resources: Fairfax County Public Schools will adopt new K – 8 Science Basal Instructional Resources for the 2022-2023 school year.  A review committee composed of community members, administrators, and teachers will meet in November and December to review the instructional materials under consideration and community feedback. Public review of the recommended materials is part of the process for selecting new resources.  K - 8 basal instructional resources may be accessed online until November 14, 2021. Digital materials for public review and comment will be available at the following link https://www.fcps.edu/node/39027. People reviewing the material online may complete an electronic comment sheet https://forms.gle/g76TjGmewaN8Fgfb6.  All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before the vote at the School Board regular meeting.

Picking-Up A Student Early? If your child needs to be picked up early please help expedite the process by sending them to school with a note. Your student will take the note to the main office before school starts to get a pass so s/he can meet you in the main office at the designated time. In your note please include:

  • Student’s name
  • Appointment date
  • Pick-up time
  • Reason for leaving early
  • Parent/Guardian signature

1st Quarter Report Cards, SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE Access: First quarter report cards will go home with students in Panther Time the week of November 8. Due to grade preparation for first quarter marks, SIS will be unavailable to all FCPS parents and students from Friday, October 29th at 4pm until Saturday, November 13th at 6am.

Donations Accepted for Glasgow’s Brain Break Time: As you may know, all Glasgow students participate in a 20 minute Brain Break during every 4th period class. With hundreds of students playing outdoors during this time, teachers who supervise Brain Breaks have requested additional sporting equipment to help provide students opportunities for structured play. We are accepting donations of equipment such as soccer balls, footballs, and basketballs that can be made available to students and teachers during their brain breaks. Please drop off donations to the front office. Thank you for your support!

Glasgow Reading Invasion: Join us for a community Reading Invasion at Glasgow Middle School on November 6 from 1:00-3:00 PM. To celebrate our school community’s love of reading, we invite you to bring something to read and “invade” the Glasgow field. This isn’t a book club - just a time to come together, to enjoy the act of reading. We will be providing free book giveaways, a storytime for our youngest readers, and Kona Ice (https://www.kona-ice.com/flavorwave/) will be available for purchase. So bring a blanket, your family, and enjoy the weather during this communal reading experience.

Afterschool Updates

SGA will be holding an after school club every Thursday during academic time. You must sign up at lunch on Wednesday with a max of 40 students. We will meet in the lecture hall. SGA is a fun way to get involved in the school and make positive changes while also voicing your opinions and having fun setting up spirit days and school dances! After school SGA club will start on November 11, 2021!

Are you interested in getting a head start in high school athletics? Do you want to try something new? If you've heard of rowing and want to see what it's all about, come try out the Glasgow ERG Program. Justice HS rowing students will be coming to the Glasgow Afterschool program to teach the basics of ERG’ing, a fundamental part of rowing. The erg machine mimics the action of rowing on water, and is a great way to introduce yourself to the sport. ERG will run Mondays and Thursdays at 3:45. ERG will end November 22, 2021. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Williams gwilliams2@fcps.edu for more information.
