Floris Families,

It is hard to believe, but this is the last Friday Message for November. Next week, all FCPS schools and offices are closed Wednesday-Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday. We have much to be thankful for each day.

In order to give everyone a true break, teachers will not be assigning homework over the Thanksgiving Break, and no tests/due dates will be on November 29-30.

It was great to see many of you at the PTA meeting on Wednesday. Staff would like to thank the PTA for providing a delicious lunch on Tuesday. There are many ways to be a part of the PTA and support Floris. Please check out their website for details.

Remember that the link to nominate a Floris staff member for a FCPS Outstanding Employee Awards closes today. Please take a moment to nominate a Floris staff member by going to this Google Form

Have a wonderful weekend and a safe Thanksgiving Holiday!

Holly Walker, Principal, hjwalker@fcps.edu

Amanda Dorr, Assistant Principal, acdorr@fcps.edu

 Gratitude (Nov. 22-Dec.3)

What does Gratitude mean? You are aware of and thankful for good things that happen. Gratitude is the quality of feeling and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world, and that we have received that goodness.

Why does it matter? Out of all 24-character strengths, gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is correlated with increased energy, empathy, happiness and optimism. Numerous studies have concluded that gratitude is like a muscle. The more you practice it, the stronger it gets – and the more you’re able to reap its benefits.

Quote of the Week: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” – John F. Kennedy

Floris's Annual Giving Tree

Happy ALMOST Thanksgiving!  As me move into the holiday season, please consider participating in Floris's Annual Giving Tree!  As a school community, we recognize the hardships many families are facing right now and will once again be “adopting” local families for the holiday season. If your family is able to "adopt" a family, please sign up for a gift card slot here (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0D49A4AB2A1-floris1).

We ask that all gift cards be:

  • Mailed to Floris (Attn: Sarah de Kramer, 2708 Centreville Road Herndon, VA 20171) to arrive by Dec. 14
  • Dropped off at Door 1 (supervised box) on Dec. 14 between 10:00am- 3:00pm.

Thank you for your continued generosity.

If you know of a family in need, please email Sarah de Kramer at shdekramer@fcps.edu

Level IV AAP Parent Referrals

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-6 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to Amy Albanese at abalbanese@fcps.edu by no later than December 15.

The window to submit an AAP Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually. Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they are submitted to the central selection committee by emailing Amy Albanese, abalbanese@fcps.edu. Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.

For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our fall parent information meetings at Floris Elementary.

You can also find information and the presentations from Ms. Albanese at  the Floris AAP Website.

FCPS will not accept any late referrals after December 15.

Today is the last day to nominate for the 2021-2022 FCPS Outstanding Employee Awards!
