This Week at Frost - October 25, 2021

This Week in Review

Greetings Frost MS Community!

We had a great week last week at Frost MS! Faculty, staff, and students all wore the color orange to bring awareness to Bullying prevention on Unity Day! Our students also had the opportunity to sign a banner during lunch to signify that they would work together to stamp out bullying! Why orange? Well, orange is hard to miss. We try to encourage our students to be kind, accepting, and inclusive each day!

Don’t forget we have a few PTA events coming up over the next few weeks! Come on out next Friday to Dickey’s BBQ (11199 Lee Highway) Restaurant Night from 11AM- 9PM, and our next PTA meeting will be on November 9th at 7:30 PM!

In addition, please note on your calendars that this Friday, October 29th is a two-hour early release day and that November 1st and 2nd are student holidays! Frost MS teachers will be working from an alternate location on the teacher workdays as there will be no heat in the building due to work being done related to the renovation on these days.

We love seeing students get into the holiday spirit for Halloween! Faculty, staff, and the admin team join in on the fun as well. If you plan to send your student to school in a costume this year, please ensure that the costumes are school appropriate. Please note that masks or any items that cover the entire face are not allowed as well as any costume accessories that may tempt students to make poor choices!!

As always, “Work Hard. Be Nice. Widen Your Circle!” We are #ONEFrost!

COVID Testing

In support of our commitment to safety, Frost MS will begin optional COVID-19 screening testing students the week of November 15.

Routine testing is a highly recommended strategy to reduce COVID-19 transmission and keep our schools safe. Following recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 10% of students who are not fully vaccinated and have parent/guardian consent will be randomly selected for weekly testing.

Parent/guardian consent is required for students to be part of the testing pool. We will share more information about how to submit your child(ren)’s vaccination status and opt-in to testing soon. Test results will be kept confidential. Parents/guardians will be able to review results through the secure vendor portal. Parents/guardians may select an option to share their child’s test results with FCPS. Sharing results with FCPS is optional.

More information about COVID-19 testing in FCPS can be found on the FCPS website

Sub and Save the Day!

FCPS needs substitute teachers. Substitute teaching is a great opportunity for stay-at-home parents, retirees, college students, and anyone who wants a flexible work schedule. Like many school districts across the region and country, FCPS is looking for kind and caring substitute teachers to ensure our students continue to thrive when teachers need to be out of the building. If you are interested in substitute teaching, you can set parameters for the days you are available, the grade levels you would like to teach, or the schools where you want to assist.

FCPS Solicits Public Comment on K - 8 Science Basal Instructional Resources Under Consideration for Adoption

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is soliciting public review and comment on basal instructional resources under consideration for K - 8 Science.  A basal resource review committee composed of community members, administrators, and teachers will meet in November and December of 2021 to review and recommend new K - 8 Science instructional resources to the School Board.  Citizens are encouraged to review materials under consideration and complete the online public comment form so that valuable community feedback may be shared with the School Board and committee as part of the review process.

K - 8 Science basal instructional materials may be accessed online October 14th through November 14th.  Digital materials for public review and comment will be available at the following link https://www.fcps.edu/node/39027 beginning October 14th.

Impact Aid forms were sent home on Tuesday 10/19.  The original survey needs to be completed and returned to your student’s Falcon Focus teacher.  If you have questions or if you need an additional survey, please contact Rema Cancino, Frost's Impact Aid Coordinator at rlcancino@fcps.edu

Vaccination Clinic Open at Tysons Corner

Widespread vaccination is working to keep our students learning in person in FCPS. As of this week, 0.004% of FCPS’ approximately 180,000 students are impacted by quarantines. If you, your child, or someone you know is eligible to receive the vaccine or a booster, we have great news for you.

A multi-agency effort to move into the next phase of vaccinations, with booster shots and the potential for children under 12 to be vaccinated, launched the Fairfax Community Vaccination Center (Fairfax CVC) on Friday, October 8. This large-scale COVID-19 vaccination clinic is open at the former Lord & Taylor store at Tysons Corner Center.

The center offers:

  • First and second doses of both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
  • Booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine to individuals eligible for the vaccine booster.
  • An additional dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines for individuals who are immunocompromised.

The Fairfax CVC will operate Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. Individuals seeking a booster of the Pfizer vaccine or an additional dose of either vaccine are asked to bring their vaccination card showing the dates of previous doses.

Read more about the Fairfax CVC online. To find an appointment visit vaccinate.virginia.gov or call 877-VAX-IN-VA.

Off and Away for the Day – Consequences for Non-Compliance

As you know, Frost MS is an Away for the Day School again this year. Students will be required to turn phones/electronic devices off and keep them in their backpacks from 7:30-2:15 with the following exceptions:

  • Before School- during breakfast
  • Brain Breaks
  • Lunch

Students who are observed using their phones during the school day can expect the following consequences:

  • The first and second violations will result in the phone being confiscated from the student and kept in the front office for the student to pick up at dismissal.
  • The third and subsequent violations will require a parent/guardian to pick up the phone in the main office.
  • Parents/guardians will be notified after the 2nd violation as a reminder.

Please review this policy and the consequences with your students.

Going Home with a Friend on a Different Bus?  Here’s How….

If a student wants to ride home on a different bus with a friend, each student will need to submit a note from their parent/guardian giving permission to ride home with another student.  Students must give those notes to the front office before the end of lunch in to allow for sufficient time to issue a bus pass to the student.

How to Check Your Student Out Early

If you know in advance that you will need to check your student out of school early, please have them bring a note to the front office that morning and a pink check-out form will be given to your student to allow them to leave class at the time noted.  You will need to meet them in the front office with your ID to sign them out.

If they are coming back that same day, a parent does not need to sign the student back in.  Students will come to the front office and sign themselves back in and we will give them a pass back to class. NOTE: Please check to make sure your emergency contact list is accurate.  Only adults listed on your student’s emergency contact list can sign a student out (with photo ID).

How to Report an Absence

If your child is sick or will be absent for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible by reporting an absence. Form submissions are monitored throughout the day by our office staff and your child’s attendance will be updated in SIS for our teachers. You can find the form at the bottom of our Frost MS WebpageYou can use this direct link also.
