Good Evening Luther Jackson Families,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend and please see the below items for our most updated information at Luther Jackson MS! As a reminder, we will have a school spirit week for students to celebrate the final days of the first quarter (see above). With that in mind, please know that students will not be allowed to dress-up in costume for Halloween on 10/29 (Friday). Instead, we ask that all students wear their favorite sports teams gear on Friday to celebrate the last day of the quarter.

FCPS Solicits Public Comment on K-8 Science Basal Instructional Resources Under Consideration for Adoption
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is soliciting public review and comment on basal instructional resources under consideration for K - 8 Science. A basal resource review committee composed of community members, administrators, and teachers will meet in November and December of 2021 to review and recommend new K - 8 Science instructional resources to the School Board. Citizens are encouraged to review materials under consideration and complete the online public comment form so that valuable community feedback may be shared with the School Board and committee as part of the review process.

Federal Impact Aid forms
FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid as soon as possible. These funds are used to support FCPS schools and centers. Students will bring Impact Aid Student-Parent Survey forms home on Monday 10/18. Please complete and return the form to your child's school as soon as possible but no later than November 5. The survey helps FCPS identify federally-connected students and support its request for Impact Aid resources. FCPS anticipates receiving about $3,000,000 annually in Impact Aid grant funds from the US Department of Education. Thank you!

The Thomas Jefferson School for Science and Technology application portal is open from October 25th at 4:00PM to November 19th at 4:00PM. No new applications can be started after November 17th. Daily Health Screening Reminder & Key COVID-19 Terms
Thank you for continuing to monitor your child's health each day. You can use the FCPS daily health screening questionnaire to help you determine when to keep your child home.
FCPS has created a video that defines key COVID-19 terms you might hear the school and district use.
COVID-19 Response Flowchart for Families
When a positive COVID-19 case is reported at Woodburn, a collaborative effort to investigate close contacts and determine the appropriate next steps for affected students begins. To help families know what to expect, the process is outlined on the FCPS website.
COVID Case Notification Process
Once a week, either on Friday or the last day of school for the week, school leadership will share an update if there were any COVID-19 positive cases confirmed in the school that week.
Potential close contacts of the positive case that are paused from in-person instruction and activities will continue to receive real time notifications.
The FCPS COVID-19 Health Metrics webpage is updated daily for families who wish to know about cases in real-time.

Student Rights & Responsibilities
The Students Rights & Responsibilities handbook will be transitioning to a digital format. All students will have the handbook on their laptop and parents can access the SR&R here.
Starting this school year, parents/guardians with a ParentVUE account can download and digitally sign the SR&R in ParentVUE. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account, regardless of relationship to the student, will see the SR&R upon login to PVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.
ACTION REQUIRED: The SR&R Parent / Guardian Signature Sheet is due October 29, 2021.

World Languages Credit Exam
The 2021 World Languages Credit Exam is a countywide exam and will be administered on November 17, 2021 at LJMS. Thirty languages will be included: American Sign Language, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin), Farsi, French, German, Greek*, Hebrew*, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Nepali, Pashto, Portuguese*, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Tigrinya, Turkish*, Twi, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
*Greek, Hebrew, Portuguese and Turkish will be offered by the Writing Proficiency Test by Language Testing International.
Registration for the WLCE is now open and closes on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted. Please contact your student’s school for registration information. School counselors will register students at their individual schools.

If your student is a new FCPS student (enrolled after January 2021), and you are interested in them being screened for the Level IV AAP program, please contact your student’s school counselor. The AAP Level IV Referral Form found here is due to school counselors by Thursday, October 7, 2021.
