Glasgow Community Gazette - October 24

Powell

Glasgow Community:

Friday night’s PTA Movie Night was a great success! It was good seeing the students and families together for the evening. It was also good to visit some families on Friday through my weekly home visits. Please continue to reach out if you are interested in me visiting your family!

I cannot believe that next week is the last week of the first quarter!  Please encourage your students to check their missing assignments in SIS Student Vue and communicate with their teachers about what they should focus on completing this week. Friday, October 29th--it will be an Odd Day for our 2 hour early release day that begins at our normal time of 7:30AM and ends at 12:15PM. Monday, November 1 and Tuesday, November 2 are student holidays.

You are invited to a Zoom PTA Meeting webinar around Glasgow MS Grading with Mr. Chung. When: Oct 26, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada). Register in advance for this webinar: https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_k-Enuk7pTXmpfGYMS9ft0g

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Also, as we begin the 2nd quarter, I want to remind our Kiss and Ride families of a few things: 1. Please pull up to the last orange cone by the 3rd crosswalk and also please try to be in line for Kiss and Ride by 7:15 AM so students can get to their first class of the day in a timely manner.

We hope you have a great fall week! As always, thank you for your continued support of our school!

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

As part of our PBIS program to encourage academic achievement and improvement, we are pleased to present our *NEW* reward and recognition initiative to promote student COMMITMENT to academics. All nominated students will receive a certificate (distributed during Panther Time). In addition, one VIP and one MIP from each grade level will be recognized as our Panthers of the Month, with their pictures displayed by the main office and on our new morning announcements show, Good Morning Glasgow.

Congratulations to our VIP (Very Important Panthers) for the month of September! VIPs (Very Important Panther) demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, performing at a high level, produces superior work, demonstrates skills above and beyond mastery.

Nicholas Robinson, 6th grade: Nicholas is always so enthusiastic and loves to participate in all aspects of Panther Time.  He works hard in everything he does and is always attentive and respectful of his teachers and his peers.  He truly represents all of the Panther Principles of Kindness, Commitment and Safety.

Yacine Kaci, 7th grade: Yacine always participates in science class and is constantly wanting to learn more. He is a great role model for his peers to show engagement and good behavior. He is always kind to other students.

Leila Meeks, 8th grade: Leila earned the highest score on the Reading Inventory (RI) assessment out of all of my classes. Additionally, Leila's love for reading is inspiring! Her informal stop and jots and journal entries show a high level of reading comprehension. In addition to being a great student, Leila is also simply a great person. She is kind to her classmates and mature beyond her years. Congratulations, Leila! Keep up the good work. :)

Congratulations to our MIP (Most Improved Panthers) for the month of September! MIPs (Most Improved Panther) demonstrate improvement and growth in effort, a specific skillset, or overall progress in academic performance.

Lillian L. Scherer, 6th grade: Lily has always done well in Panther Time, but recently she has shown much enthusiasm and participation in class discussions and been very engaged in all of our lessons.  She is fun and loves sharing many things about herself and enjoys times with her peers.  She has become more and more dedicated to the class and the topics we have been sharing and discussing.

Carla Penarrieta Chavez, 7th grade: Carla has shown great progress since the beginning of school.  She clearly takes her studies seriously. She always asks for help when she doesn't understand something and is growing into an academic leader in our classroom. I'm so proud of Carla for her hard work and for never giving up, even when things are difficult.

Jonathan Noriega-Hernandez, 8th grade: Jonathan has shown tremendous growth over the past 6 weeks. He is consistently doing his work and engaging in class activities.  I love seeing his excitement when a new idea clicks and when he does well on an activity. He is having a positive influence on those around him and it is great to see him not only doing well, but encouraging his friends to excel too.

important information

Important Information

COVID Testing for Students: In support of our commitment to safety, Glasgow will begin optional COVID-19 screening testing students the week of November 8.  Routine testing is a highly recommended strategy to reduce COVID-19 transmission and keep our schools safe. Following recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 10% of students who are not fully vaccinated and have parent/guardian consent will be randomly selected for weekly testing. Parent/guardian consent is required for students to be part of the testing pool. We will share more information about how to submit your child(ren)’s vaccination status and opt in to testing soon. Test results will be kept confidential. Parents/guardians will be able to review results through the secure vendor portal. Parents/guardians may select an option to share their child’s test results with FCPS. Sharing results with FCPS is optional. More information about COVID-19 testing in FCPS can be found on the FCPS website. As always, we encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

1st Quarter Report Cards, SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE Access: First quarter report cards will go home with students in Panther Time the week of November 8. Due to grade preparation for first quarter marks, SIS will be unavailable to all FCPS parents and students from Friday, October 29th at 4pm until Saturday, November 13th at 6am.

Signs of Suicide - Depression Screener for 7th Grade StudentsLast week Glasgow’s Student Services department conducted the Signs of Suicide program in collaboration with 7th grade Health and PE classes. Over 600 Glasgow students learned how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend and how to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend. They were also reminded that they can talk to their school counselors for support when needed. If you or your child has follow-up questions about this program please contact Student Services at (703) 813-8740. Counselors, school social workers, and school psychologists are happy to help problem-solve and provide resources!

Donations Accepted for Glasgow’s Brain Break Time: As you may know, all Glasgow students participate in a 20 minute Brain Break during every 4th period class. With hundreds of students playing outdoors during this time, teachers who supervise Brain Breaks have requested additional sporting equipment to help provide students opportunities for structured play. We are accepting donations of equipment such as soccer balls, footballs, and basketballs that can be made available to students and teachers during their brain breaks. Please drop off donations to the front office. Thank you for your support!

Glasgow Reading Invasion: Join us for a community Reading Invasion at Glasgow Middle School on November 6 from 1:00-3:00 PM. To celebrate our school community’s love of reading, we invite you to bring something to read and “invade” the Glasgow field. This isn’t a book club - just a time to come together, to enjoy the act of reading. We will be providing free book giveaways, a storytime for our youngest readers, and Kona Ice (https://www.kona-ice.com/flavorwave/) will be available for purchase. So bring a blanket, your family, and enjoy the weather during this communal reading experience.

Lost Laptops and Chargers: When students lose an FCPS provided laptop or charger they are responsible for replacing them.

Replacement fee for lost computer equipment:

  • Dell 3310 Laptop Computer ($472.00)
  • Dell 3310 Charger ($23)

Replacement charges can be paid through: MySchoolBucks - https://www.myschoolbucks.com/

Once a student pays the replacement fee, we will provide them a new charger or laptop. Please do not purchase a replacement charger through outside stores or vendors.

Digital Resources Consent Form: At Glasgow, our teachers use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child will use this year require your consent before they can be accessed. Classes have begun working with some of these resources already. Your child will be unable to participate in these activities if you do not provide consent. We must have a completed form for each student every school year in order for them to continue to access the digital tools we are using in instruction. Please complete the digital resource consent at the link below if you haven’t already.

Use this link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This will serve as your permission for your student to have access to these tools. This permission will expire at the end of this school year and can be revoked at any time by contacting the school.

OR if you cannot complete the form, please email mkhedenberg@fcps.edu with your student's ID number and your written consent to allow your child to use the digital resources at Glasgow.

You can find more information about FCPS’ commitment to student privacy here and a list of all approved digital tools is viewable online in the FCPS Digital Ecosystem Library which has links to the vendors’ privacy notices and other useful information. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://glasgowms.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Thanks so much for taking care of this important piece of information.
