Franklin MS Weekly Update - October 22

Franklin Families and Students,

Next week will bring us to the finish of the 1st quarter of the school year. I am extremely proud of the work ethic, perseverance, and resiliency that has been on display by our students and staff. At the same time, our students and staff are also showing us that they are amazing collaborators, communicators, and creative thinkers. While there is still much to be accomplished this year, we are off to a great start and we are very grateful for all of your support.

Our 7th graders participated in a Science field trip this week to explore the watershed at Cub Run. I would like to thank our staff members for all of their efforts that made this a safe and successful trip and to all of the parents who volunteered their time to be chaperones this week. We are hopeful to offer several more relevant and authentic learning experiences like this one to our students throughout the year.

The first Franklin Spirit Week of the year will take place next week. More information about the events can be found below. Please note that students are not able to wear costumes during our Sprit Week.

As always, any member of the Franklin community can reach out to me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu. Your feedback, questions, and concerns are always appreciated.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Digital Citizenship Week

This week students learned more about digital citizenship during Falcon Time lessons. We discussed how to take inventory of their online habits, how to be responsible decision makers when they are online, and how to deal with digital drama. We have several resources for parents to support these conversations posted to our Schoology All Parent Course.

Federal Impact Aid Survey Information

The Impact Aid Program is a federal grant program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program's mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned and therefore tax exempt property.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid forms were sent home last week with all students. If you have not already done so, please check with your child to obtain the form. If an additional copy of the form is needed, please contact Kristine Smith. For more information on the Federal Impact Aid form, please click here for more information.

All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5.

National Junior Honor Society Information

8th Grade students who applied and were accepted to NJHS in the spring of 2021 received an email on October 8 in their fcpsschools.net account with information regarding the Induction Ceremony. We ask that students please submit the form included in that email no later than Monday, October 25 if they would like to be inducted into NJHS. Please encourage your student to check their inbox for this email. As part of this email, students will be invited to join a Schoology group. This group will be our primary source of communication with members this year.

The Induction ceremony will be after school on October 27. Students will attend the ceremony in person. This is a late bus day, so students can ride the late bus home or be picked up at the end of the first block by an adult.

Parents, we will be emailing you a link to view our live stream of the ceremony early next week.  If you have not received the link by the end of the school day on Tuesday, October 26, please contact Ms. Bridenbaugh.

Veterans Day 2021

Franklin Family, are you or a family member a veteran or someone who is currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces? If so, please consider the following opportunity. The Franklin MS Civics team is creating a video compilation of Franklin Community members who have served or are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, to go with a music tribute from our wonderful music department. If you would be willing to share a part of your story or experiences with us, we would love to hear from you so we can share what you have to say with our students. A link to an interest form can be found here, and in the FMS all school schoology page. Thank you for your consideration, time and service.

Franklin MS After School Program Information

All Franklin students are welcome to join the After School Program. If your student has not yet participated, it’s not too late! Most activities are drop in and your child will not need to sign up in advance. Our late bus days are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with parent pick up on Tuesday and Friday. New activities include; Urban Gardening Club, Flag Football, and a Top Chef interest meeting. The schedule for next week can be found here. Please email Mrs. Mollé with any questions regarding the After School Program.
