Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid
Hughes sent these forms home on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 please check with your student. You will need to complete 1 pre-printed form for each student enrolled in your household, please complete, sign, date, and have your student return their form to their 1st period teacher. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month! Former student and South Lakes graduate, Steve Phillips, makes an incredible impact here at Langston Hughes Middle School as does Erin Kelly.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The After-School Program is looking for people to sponsor STEM related clubs/ activities.
Clubs take place Monday-Friday from 2:30pm - 4:30pm. We are looking for volunteers and/or people seeking paid positions.

Our LHMS bookroom has many new titles! Before teachers offer these books as choices to students for literature circles, book clubs, or class reads, we complete a rationale for each title and have the book reviewed and approved by 2 teachers AND 2 parents of LHMS students.
We're looking for parent volunteers to choose a book (or books!) from our list to read/review. You can get your own copy of the book or borrow one from the school to be brought home to you by your student. See more details and sign up here!

Langston Hughes Diversity After School Special
November 18, 2021 2:30-3:00 in the cafeteria; activity afterwards in the lecture hall 3:00-4:30pm
At Langston Hughes, YOU BELONG! We are having a Diversity After School Special to highlight the diversity showcased every day at Langston. The 5th and 6th period AVID and ESOL classes have combined to complete research and projects for this event. Come see their work after school on November 18th from 2:30-3:00pm in the cafeteria. All students are encouraged to stay after school to check out the booths and activities. All after school activities on 11-18 will be canceled with the expectation that all students who had planned to stay after school attend the event. (Teachers will still meet with students after school that day, that is not cancelled) After the showcase in the cafeteria, an activity will be held in the Lecture Hall for all students who wait for a late bus. Students can also take their own method of transportation home after the event.

First Quarter You’re “On a Roll” Awards
Teachers will recognize our students who have stood out this quarter for displaying our POWER characteristics - punctual, ownership, welcoming, engaged, and respectful. We will be honoring these students in Connections classes on November 8th.
Panther Parent/Caregiver Academy, Session #2
The second session of the Parent/Caregiver Academy will be held on October 28 from 6:30-7:30 in the LHMS library. Please join assistant principal, Amy Smith, who will share information on helping your student navigate friendships, relationships, and social media.
Use this Sign-Up Genius link to RSVP; space and social distancing requirements require us to cap the event at 35 participants. First consideration will be given to 7th grade parents who are new to middle school.

Future Academy Dates are December 1, January 18, and February 23 and include topics including school resources available to support you and your student, helping your student navigate social changes and social media, effective communication and affirmation, and course selection/special programming available to Hughes students.
ACT (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell an Adult) Program and Wellness Screening
On October 25th and 26th for 8th grade our clinical support team will be introducing a county-approved wellness screening curriculum to our students during health and PE classes The goals of this program are to educate students on the signs and symptoms of depression, to let students know what to do if they have concerns about themselves or a peer, and to connect students who may need support with resources inside and outside of our school. During the program, students will watch a video which will help students to identify signs of depression and distress in themselves and others, as well as what to do if they, or someone they know, are experiencing these symptoms. Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a response slip which asks whether they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. School staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk. Students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional. Hughes After School Club Sign-up

(This site is only accessible while using a student google account.) Students should pay attention to announcements during lunches and at the end of the day for club updates. Some clubs will be added, as we gain access to more space. Also, your student may find their late bus information on their "StudentVue" under Student Information

Middle school students who have an aptitude and passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) are encouraged to apply for admission to the Class of 2026 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) beginning Monday, October 25.
The application will be available on the TJHSST Admissions Office webpage starting October 25, at 4 p.m. Applications must be started by 4 p.m. Wednesday, November 17, with a deadline to submit the application by Friday, November 19, at 4 p.m.
