Glasgow Community:
Greetings! This past weekend was busy and productive. I was able to do some home visits on Sunday, hang out with the kids and participate in my Urban Superintendents Program through AASA. We were excited to see the parents who attended our principal coffee around Schoology and our COVID Mitigation Strategies. We will be conducting many more principal coffees throughout the school year around various topics. Also, we were excited to have the Fall Concert this past Wednesday where our kids collaborated with Justice HS students. They made beautiful music!
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month! Here at Glasgow Middle School inclusion makes our school community stronger! FCPS is also looking for kind and caring substitute teachers to ensure our students continue to thrive when teachers need to be out of the building. Substitute teaching is a great opportunity for stay-at-home parents, retirees, college students, and anyone who wants a flexible work schedule. Subs save the day- apply today!
We have been excited for our AVID and Glasgow Scholars students to participate in a few college tours over the past week to the University of Maryland - College Park, MD. These opportunities and access points are key for frontloading experiences for our Glasgow MS students! Also, while one of our Assistant Principal’s - Mrs. Deirdre McShea Levin is out on maternity leave, Mr. Sean Rolon (sprolon@fcps.edu) will be the Acting Assistant Principal at Glasgow MS until she returns in February 2021. He will be supporting 8th grade and working with our ESOL and PE Departments. We are excited to have him assisting in our building! Let's make it feel welcome to the Glasgow MS family!
As always, if you have any questions or needs please let the grade level administrator or school counselor know how we can support you! Thank you for all your support thus far! Let's have a great week!
Humbly,
Victor L. Powell, Principal

Important Information
PTA - Movie Night: THE STUDENTS HAVE VOTED! The PTA's outdoor movie night this coming FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22 will feature everyone's favorite Ogre, SHREK! The movie will start at 7 on the Glasgow field. Come early with a picnic, blanket or lawn chairs. Ice cream from Jake's Ice Cream, popcorn & drinks will be available for purchase. We are excited to see everyone there on Friday!
1st Quarter Report Cards, SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE Access: First quarter report cards will go home with students in Panther Time the week of November 8. Due to grade preparation for first quarter marks, SIS will be unavailable to all FCPS parents and students from Friday, October 29th at 4pm until Saturday, November 13th at 6am.
Glasgow Reading Invasion: Join us for a community Reading Invasion at Glasgow Middle School on November 6 from 1:00-3:00 PM. To celebrate our school community’s love of reading, we invite you to bring something to read and “invade” the Glasgow field. This isn’t a book club - just a time to come together, to enjoy the act of reading. We will be providing free book giveaways, a storytime for our youngest readers, and Kona Ice (https://www.kona-ice.com/flavorwave/) will be available for purchase. So bring a blanket, your family, and enjoy the weather during this communal reading experience.
AVID Field Trip Chaperones: Hello Glasgow parents and guardians! One of the goals of the Strategies for Success and AVID courses at Glasgow MS is to expose students to the opportunities available to them for their future. For this reason, our classes will be attending a College campus visit based on their grade level. Both the University of Maryland and George Mason University have graciously allowed our students to tour the campus and learn about the university’s academic programs, athletic programs, campus life, and more. This is sure to be an extraordinary experience for our students to learn about post-secondary education!
Glasgow will be taking these field trips on a few different day with different groups of students. Therefore, we are looking for any parent volunteers who would be willing to come along on the field trip with us as chaperones. If you are interested in volunteering as a chaperone, please email Kelly Greenshields at kagreenshiel@fcps.edu. Field trips are an invaluable learning opportunity for students and we hope you will be able to join us!

Afterschool Updates
Hello Glasgow Families! I’d like to announce the Glasgow Identity Club (formerly known as LGBTQIA) The reason the club name was changed was to make students who may feel hesitant about announcing that they are going to LGBTQIA club more comfortable. Glasgow Identity Club allows kids to withhold their actual sexual identity if they are not out or comfortable being out yet. If you’re interested in joining, the club meets on Thursdays during Activity Block in room E-203. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Caesar at sgcaesar@fcps.edu!
Week In Review: This past week, the Builder Club started and will run during Academic Block on Mondays and Wednesdays. In Builders Club, you will learn important pre-engineering skills to prepare you for high school and college! Join this once popular club at Glasgow to build, code, and learn! Ms. Millsap is the club sponsor for this activity. For more information, please contact Ms. Millsap at amwilliams@fcps.edu.
G.E.M.S (Glasgow in Engineering, Math and Science) also met on Wednesday. In this club, students learn about engineering and STEM related activities. If you’re interested or have any questions, please contact Mr. Williams gwilliams2@fcps.edu.
