Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It’s been a fun week to show our school pride and unity as a community. Students and staff participated in our Spirit Week (click on attached link to see video), and all students received a Langston Hughes t-shirt. We invite our families to come out to watch the South Lakes Homecoming parade at 5 p.m. tonight that runs from the Hunters Woods Shopping Center to the high school. Our own Futsol Club, Environmental Club, Langston Leadership Council, and the Langston Hughes Panther will be a part of the parade! At 7 p.m. students with their parents are invited to the football game and support the Seahawks. Students are not permitted into the game with their backpacks. Go Seahawks!
On Monday night, please join us at the monthly PTA meeting in person in our library or online via the link in your Parent Schoology account. I will present our meeting topic Community Service Requirements and Opportunities. I hope to see many of you there.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid
Beginning on October 13, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.
Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
Hughes will be sending these forms home on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 so please check with your student. You will need to complete 1 pre-printed form for each student enrolled in your household, please complete, sign, date, and have your student return their form to their 1st period teacher. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5. All results are confidential.

Panther Parent/Caregiver Academy, Session #2
The second session of the Parent/Caregiver Academy will be held on October 28 from 6:30-7:30 in the LHMS library. Please join assistant principal, Amy Smith, who will share information on helping your student navigate friendships, relationships, and social media.

Future Academy Dates are December 1, January 18, and February 23 and include topics including school resources available to support you and your student, helping your student navigate social changes and social media, effective communication and affirmation, and course selection/special programming available to Hughes students.
ACT (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell an Adult) Program and Wellness Screening
On October 19th and 20th for 7th grade and on October 25th and 26th for 8th grade our clinical support team will be introducing a county-approved wellness screening curriculum to our students during health and PE classes The goals of this program are to educate students on the signs and symptoms of depression, to let students know what to do if they have concerns about themselves or a peer, and to connect students who may need support with resources inside and outside of our school. During the program, students will watch a video which will help students to identify signs of depression and distress in themselves and others, as well as what to do if they, or someone they know, are experiencing these symptoms. Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a response slip which asks whether they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. School staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk. Students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional. (This site is only accessible while using a student google account.) Students should pay attention to announcements during lunches and at the end of the day for club updates. Some clubs will be added, as we gain access to more space. Also, your student may find their late bus information on their "StudentVue" under Student Information

What does Thanksgiving look like for you? Visiting with loved ones? Watching parades and football? Enjoying the sights, smells, and flavors of some favorite foods? Help create these memories for one or more school families who struggle with food security. Donate to the Food For Neighbors Holiday Meals Program!
