PSAT/SAT School Day Reminders - October 13

October 13th is a two-hour early release day. Students in grades 10 and 11, as well as some students in grade 12, will be testing during the day rather than reporting to classes.

  • Grade 9: All 9th grade students in FCPS will work from home on October 13th. Students in grade 9 will complete asynchronous lessons (accessible through Schoology) from home.
  • Grade 10 & 11: Students in grades 10 and 11 will report to their PSAT testing location at 8:10am. Details on PSAT test day locations/rooms, and what to bring/what not to bring on test day were sent to student emails the week of 10/4.
  • Grade 12: Grade 12 students who signed up in advance for the SAT will also report to their SAT testing location at 8:10am. Confirmation emails including SAT test day locations were sent to students on 9/28.  Seniors who did not sign up in advance to take the SAT will not report to the building on October 13th but instead will have an unscheduled day; students are encouraged to participate in a civic engagement activity, attend a college tour, or use the time to complete school assignments.
  • Additional schedule info for 10/13: PSAT and SAT exams will begin promptly at 8:10am. Grab-and-go lunch will be provided by the cafeteria after the PSAT/SAT test, but students may also choose to bring a snack to eat during testing breaks. High school academy courses will not be held on October 13.

Testing day tips include getting a good night’s sleep the night before, eating a heathy breakfast, dressing comfortably in layers, and making sure #2 pencils, erasers, a snack, and a calculator with fresh batteries are all packed and ready to go. Pencils and calculators will not be available on test day.

Student-Athlete Vaccination Requirement Deadlines

Starting November 8, students who are 16 years or older are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a medical or religious exemption on file in order to participate in Virginia High School League (VHSL) winter and spring sports for the remainder of the 2021-22 school year.

Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination will also be required for participation in any other activity that requires a physical. This includes dance team and step team, as well as out-of-season practices and workouts. Unvaccinated students 12-15 years of age must provide a negative COVID-19 test weekly to participate in team activities.

Falls Church HS is now accepting proof of vaccination or qualified exemptions for students.

Proof of vaccination is provided by showing the student’s vaccination card to the Student Activities Office.

Medical exemptions must be submitted through a letter from the student’s doctor, on the doctor’s office letterhead, stating the student has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented health or medical reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test every week. To provide documentation of a medical exemption: submit documentation to the Student Activities Office.

Religious exemptions must be submitted using the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption form and must be notarized. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to religious reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test every week. To provide documentation of a religious exemption: submit documentation to the Student Activities Office.

Proof of vaccination or exemption must be submitted by November 1, 2021.

Weekly testing will be required for unvaccinated students 12-15 and those who qualify for medical or religious exemptions. The test will need to be either a rapid test or a PCR test. Home testing using over-the-counter testing products will not be accepted.

For more information about the vaccination requirement for student-athletes, visit the FCPS website.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning this week, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5. All results are confidential

More information is available online.

2021 School Bond Referendum

Election Day is Tuesday, November 2, 2021, and a school construction bond referendum (including Falls Church HS) is on the ballot.

New and renovated schools provide optimal spaces for teaching and learning–and the entire community benefits too. Our school construction and renovation programs help provide space for our students and educators. But, our buildings also serve the community as teen centers, recreation sites, polling places, places of worship, civic meeting spaces, School Age Child Care facilities, and more.

Before you vote, I hope that you’ll take a moment to read about how Fairfax County Public Schools plans to fund school projects with bond proceeds. You can learn more about the 2021 School Bond Referendum here.

A School Bond Referendum is on November’s ballot.

Vote, on Tuesday, November 2.  Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Students Sent Home With Covid-Like Illness

FCPS has updated guidance for students sent home with COVID-like symptoms. Starting Monday, October 4, we will follow the following guidelines.

Students may return to school when their symptoms have improved, and they have not had a fever without fever-reducing medications for at least 24 hours, AND have at least one of the following:

Proof of a Negative COVID-19 Test:

  • PCR (test result from lab or physician)
  • Rapid (test result from lab or physician)
  • Home Test (picture of negative home test AND note from parent attesting the result is for the specific child and to the date the test was administered)

OR

Physician’s Note

Note from a healthcare provider following a clinical evaluation stating the cause of symptoms is not COVID-19 and clearing the child to return to school.

Please note, if your child has been identified as a potential close contact or close contact to a positive case, your child will follow the guidance provided by the health department to be cleared to return to school.
