Franklin MS Weekly Update - October 8

Franklin Families and Students,

I hope that all of you had a successful week. Our students and staff have been working hard as we continue to move through the 1st quarter of the school year. Monday is a Student Holiday and our staff will be using this time to engage in professional development opportunities.

At this point in the quarter, I would encourage all of our families to take some time in the coming days to discuss with your student what they are working on in their classes. This is also a good opportunity to take a look at their progress this quarter which can be viewed in SIS ParentVue/StudentVue. Don’t hesitate to reach out directly to your student’s teacher with any questions about specific assignments and assessments. If you have any trouble accessing SIS ParentVue, please contact our main office and we will connect you with a member of our Technology Team.

As always, any member of the Franklin community can reach out to me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu. Your feedback, questions, and concerns are always appreciated.

I hope that the long weekend serves as an opportunity for you to spend some extra time with family, friends, and neighbors.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

National Junior Honor Society Updates

8th Grade students who applied and were accepted to NJHS in the spring of 2021 received an email on 10/8 in their fcpsschools.net account with information regarding the Induction Ceremony. This ceremony will be after school on October 27. Students will be able to attend in person and we will invite parents to join us virtually. More details to come about virtual streaming for parents. This is a late bus day, so students can ride the late bus home or be picked up at the end of the first block by an adult. Please encourage your student to check their inbox for this email. As part of this email, students will be invited to join a Schoology group. This group will be our primary source of communication with members this year.

In an ongoing effort to refocus NJHS around the 5 Everyday Pillars the service requirement is going to be changing this year. Students will not be required to complete 15 service hours in service to an FCPS school, instead students will be completing a series of short character building activities over the course of the year. NJHS will also be sponsoring several service opportunities throughout the year, members will be required to participate in some way for at least one of those service opportunities.

After our induction ceremony, members will participate in a digital “Member Meeting” via our Schoology group. More detailed information regarding the changing service requirement will be presented to members during that presentation.

We look forward to a productive year of NJHS. If you have any questions, please contact the NJHS sponsors, Ms. Molly Bridenbaugh or Mr. Fletcher Phillips.

Service Learning Volunteer Opportunities

There are many volunteer opportunities available for students who decide to do in-person activities for service learning. Please visit the Franklin Middle School PTA Facebook page for a list of opportunities.

Federal Impact Aid Survey is Coming Soon

The Impact Aid Program is a federal grant program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program's mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned and therefore tax exempt property.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid forms will be sent home before the end of October. Please be on the lookout for this important form to be sent home with all students.

The deadline to return the completed form is Friday, November 5th.

Franklin MS After School Program

We enjoyed a great first week of the after-school program. It’s never too late for your child to join. If your child plans to attend an after-school activity, you must complete the Registration Form (required for all Franklin students). Most activities are drop in and your child will not need to sign up in advance. New activities starting next week include Flag Football, a Yearbook interest meeting, and an Urban Gardening Club interest meeting. The schedule and club descriptions can be found here. For questions regarding the After-School Program, please email Mrs. Mollé.
