Guidance for Student Sent Home
with COVID-Like Illness

With cold and flu season upon us, your child may be sent home from the care room after presenting COVID-like symptoms. We all want them back in the classroom as soon as they are well. Starting Monday, October 4, the Return to School form is no longer needed, we will follow the following guidelines.

Students may return to school when their symptoms have improved and they have not had a fever without fever-reducing medications for at least 24 hours, AND have at least one of the following:

Proof of a Negative COVID-19 Test:

  • PCR (test result from lab or physician)
  • Rapid (test result from lab or physician)
  • Home Test (picture of negative home test AND note from parent attesting the result is for the specific child and to the date the test was administered)

OR

Physician’s Note

Note from a healthcare provider following a clinical evaluation stating the cause of symptoms is not COVID-19 and clearing the child to return to school.

Please note, if your child has been identified as a potential close contact or close contact to a positive case, your child will follow the guidance provided by the health department to be cleared to return to school.

If you have any questions about this new process, or how to navigate your child’s return to school, please call the office at 703-326-3100.

stream in video

StreamIN/CheckIN has begun in FCPS schools. This new option keeps students who are paused, quarantined, or isolated due to COVID-19 connected to the classroom. Curious about what the experience is like for teachers and students? Check out this brief video

SEL Screener

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) commits to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning (SEL). The screener provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs. SEL skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

Students in grades 3-12 will be screened during the week of October 11th. In these grade levels, students will reflect and report on their own skills and experiences. Screener data will only be accessible to teachers, administrators, and staff with legitimate educational interests. Results will be maintained in secure files and databases accessible only to these individuals. Screener results will be used with other data to inform practices for SEL skill development and mental wellness. Screener data will also help staff plan interventions for students with identified needs. Parents and guardians will receive an individualized report regarding their student’s screener results following each assessment window. School staff will be available to discuss results with families on planned support.

More information, including a short video about the SEL screener in FCPS and the screener questions, can be found on the SEL Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43892). Please contact your student's school counselor or the school's test coordinator with questions.

Staff Appreciation Donations Needed

The administrative team of Herndon Elementary would like to plan different ways to show our amazing staff our appreciation.

We would like to honor our school’s hard-working, dedicated teachers and the outstanding support staff with “door prizes” at our staff meetings throughout the year.  We love to receive gift cards in any amount.

As an administrative team, we feel grateful to work with such dedicated and thoughtful professionals.  Every staff member is an asset to our school, and we are lucky to have them be part of our Herndon Elementary family.

If you would like to donate, please send all donations in your child’s Thursday folder in an envelope addressed to Mrs. Hunstad or Mrs. Baxter.  Please label your donation with your child’s name and you will also receive a thank you from the administrative team.

Thank you for all that you do to support our Bees!
