Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This past week our students spent time during their Connections class writing ‘Thank You’ letters to Healthcare Workers.  Students beautifully expressed sincere words of gratitude through heartfelt letters and drawings.   Our community’s lives have been touched by Healthcare Workers in a variety of ways and we are all extremely grateful for their hard work and sacrifices. See some student samples below. We demonstrate that Panthers Care!

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning on October 13, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Hughes will be sending these forms home on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 so please check with your student.  You will need to complete 1 pre-printed form for each student enrolled in your household, please complete, sign, date, and have your student return their form to their 1st period teacher. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5. All results are confidential

Dress Code Considerations:

As students have settled back into the school routine, we have noticed some students have become very relaxed with regard to their clothing choices.  We’re asking for your support in speaking with your student and remind them that appropriate dress is expected for the classroom environment.  While there have been modifications to the FCPS dress code in recent years, students are still expected to dress in a manner which does not distract from the educational process.  The exact wording regarding appropriate dress in the Student Rights and Responsibilities document is:

FCPS respects students’ right to express themselves in the way they dress. It is important, however, that their appearance is tasteful and appropriate for a K-12 school setting. Discussion about dress code violations shall be held privately and maintain the dignity of the student.

Clothing and accessories should not:

  • Display vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene language or images
  • Promote illegal or violent conduct
  • Contain threats or gang symbols
  • Promote the unlawful use of weapons, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or drug paraphernalia
  • Expose private parts or show an excessive amount of bare skin (see-through clothing)
  • Contain studs or chain belts
  • Include hats or other head coverings unless worn for significant religious, cultural, or medical purpose

The LHMS faculty and staff appreciate your support in this matter.

ACT (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell an Adult) Program and Wellness Screening

On October 19th and 20th for 7th grade and on October 25th and 26th for 8th grade our clinical support team will be introducing a county-approved wellness screening curriculum to our students during health and PE classes The goals of this program are to educate students on the signs and symptoms of depression, to let students know what to do if they have concerns about themselves or a peer, and to connect students who may need support with resources inside and outside of our school.   During the program, students will watch a video which will help students to identify signs of depression and distress in themselves and others, as well as what to do if they, or someone they know, are experiencing these symptoms. Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a response slip which asks whether they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. School staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk. Students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional.  We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. Parents can also view video resources here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5e27-ocGBHqSSvbIIL9-1Ibr8gutAe5k If you would like your child to Opt Out or would like more information, please contact our school psychologist, Stephanie Harris at smharris1@fcps.edu

Share the Joy of Thanksgiving with a Neighbor!

What does Thanksgiving look like for you? Visiting with loved ones? Watching parades and football? Enjoying the sights, smells, and flavors of some favorite foods? Help create these memories for one or more school families who struggle with food security. Donate to the Food For Neighbors Holiday Meals Program! Donate: https://www.foodforneighbors.org/home/holiday-meals/ Our school is partnering with Food For Neighbors to provide some of our students and families with a $50 gift card to a local grocery store. Your gift will help your neighbors to put food on their tables this Thanksgiving. The goal is to raise enough money for Food For Neighbors to provide a total of nearly 700 of the $50 grocery store gift cards to 24 participating schools, which includes ours!
