LBSS Weekly News - October 8, 2021

Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

There are several celebrations recently we wanted to honor and bring to your attention. October 6 was National Coaches Day, and we wanted to extend a warm thank you to our coaches for the endless hours of dedication and positive impact they have on our students and community. Additionally, September 15 through October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate Hispanic culture. We celebrate at this time of year because the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all received their independence on September 15. Additionally, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18.

One additional highlight we are excited about is one of our own Lake Braddock SS graduates who is now one of our teachers, Saja Abduljabbar.  She was recently featured by FCPS in their #Back2Fairfax series which tells the story of former students who come back to FCPS as teachers. It has been wonderful to welcome Ms. Abduljabbar back to our community as a teacher, and we invite you to watch the video featuring her here: https://youtu.be/jGwCAazh6K8.

Next week is an adjusted schedule for several reasons.  On Monday, students have a holiday to honor Indigenous People’s Day.  Additionally, Wednesday will be a shortened day with various adjustments that allow for us to administer the PSAT to 10 and 11 graders and the SAT for those students in grade 12 that have previously registered.  All students in grades 7, 8 and 9 will be at home and will be sent asynchronous activities through Schoology.

We encourage you to follow our social media channels to stay informed of what is going on at Lake Braddock.  We have included highlights, celebrations, and schedule adjustments as another way to keep parents informed.  Please follow us on Twitter @FCPSLBSS and Facebook @lbssfcps. If you have additional questions, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s Subschool or counselor.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

PSAT Reminder for 10th and 11th Graders/Asynchronous Day for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students

On Wednesday, October 13, all 10th and 11th graders will report to school at normal time for the PSAT/NMSQT test. Students received an email to their school Google account this week from Jennifer Bury, LBSS Assessment Coach, with their specific room assignments and general testing information.

If students need to borrow a graphing calculator, they should complete this calculator request form and turn it into their math teacher prior to Friday, October 8. College Board does not permit the school or proctors to lend calculators on test day. It is important that students arrive to school on time (8:00 a.m.) as College Board does not permit students into testing if they arrive after the start of the first section. Students must complete the full test in order to receive a score. Students with standard timing tests will be dismissed from testing at 12:30 for grab-and-go lunch and busses will depart at 12:45. Parents of students with College Board approved extended time accommodations received additional information about late testing transportation on Monday, 9/27 from Jennifer Bury.

All 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students will remain at home for asynchronous learning on Wednesday, October 13.  Seniors who did not sign up for the SAT School day will have an unscheduled day and should remain home as well.

lunch

October 11-15 is National School Lunch Week

Did you know the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) serves nearly 30 million children every school day in cafeterias, classrooms and, when necessary, even at home? Join us in celebrating #NSLW21 October 11–15 to highlight the importance of school lunch and the critical role school nutrition professionals play in helping children succeed in and out of the classroom. #NSLW21 #SchoolLunch #WILDSchoolLunch https://bit.ly/NSLW-21

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning on October 13, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's 4th period (Advisory) teacher. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5. All results are confidential

More information is available online.

Vaccination Requirement for Student Athletes

Medical Exemptions

Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented health or medical reasons will be exempt from the requirement, but they will need to provide information to their schools. Starting October 4, student-athletes can submit the medical exemption information directly to their Student Activities Office.  They will need to provide documentation of a medical exemption from their physician. Students can do this through a letter from their doctor (on the doctor’s office letterhead) stating the student has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. The deadline for submitting medical exemptions for the Winter Season is Monday, November 1. This will allow enough time for those students with a religious exemption to provide proof of their negative Covid-19 test the week prior to tryouts. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented health or medical reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test weekly.

Religious Exemptions

Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to religious reasons will be exempt from the requirement, but they will need to provide information to their schools. Starting October 4, student-athletes can submit the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption form to their schools.  The form must be notarized and should be submitted directly to the Student Activities Office. The deadline for submitting religious exemptions for the Winter Season is Monday, November 1. This will allow enough time for those students with a religious exemption to provide proof of their negative Covid-19 test the week prior to tryouts. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to religious reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test weekly.

Age Exemption

FCPS will not mandate the vaccine for student-athletes who are 12-15 years of age. However, vaccination is strongly recommended and FCPS will collect the vaccination information for those 12-15 years of age who wish to provide it. In addition, unvaccinated students who are 12-15 years of age who do not provide a weekly negative Covid-19 test will not be able to participate in team activities.

For more information, please review the FCPS Athletics Vaccination Requirement – FAQs page

There are VHSL rules about when they can hold green days like how many a coach can run, how close to actual try-outs, etc. Students who want to attend must submit the 4-page VHSL athletics participation packet of forms. If you want to know more about Green Day opportunities, please contact the coach directly - Coaches Contact Information.

SR&R Reminder

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. There are two ways for parents to acknowledge that you have received the document:

1.  In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.  E-signing for one child will suffice for all siblings within the household. Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

2.  Download and sign the Parent Signature Sheet and please return the signed signature sheet to your child's subschool.

Signatures are due by October 29, 2021.

FCPS Receives School Divisions of Innovation Award

Fairfax County Public Schools recently received the School Divisions of Innovation Award from the Virginia Board of Education. This five-year designation serves to recognize FCPS’ work to lead transformative innovation in the Commonwealth. FCPS is among five school divisions in Virginia that are recognized for designing and implementing alternatives to traditional instructional practices and school structures to improve student learning and promote college and career readiness and good citizenship.

FCPS is implementing the Fairfax County Portrait of a Graduate to provide equity in access, opportunity, and outcomes for all students. Performance will be measured through end-of-year presentations requiring students to curate evidence of learning and academic growth over time in a portfolio, and share their learning experiences and goals with authentic audiences, including teachers, families, peers and community members.

P-EBT Update for the 2021-22 School Year

The Virginia Department of Education has announced that the federal Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program will operate under new eligibility guidelines for the current school year and benefits will only be issued on a case-by-case basis to students who meet specific criteria, as defined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The P-EBT program is a federal program created in the spring of 2020 to supplement school meals that students missed while schools were closed or placed on part-time attendance schedules due to COVID-19.

What does this mean for Virginia?

  • Eligibility for P-EBT benefits will change for all students this school year.
  • There are no additional P-EBT benefits scheduled to be released at this time.
  • Breakfast and lunch are available at school to all students at no cost every school day, regardless of family income. Families are encouraged to participate in the school meal program.

Additional details regarding the release of P-EBT benefits for the 2021-22 school year are still being determined, including guidance for children under age six. More information will be communicated upon USDA's approval of Virginia's P-EBT plan.

Questions regarding benefits should be directed to the P-EBT Call Center from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday - Friday at 866-513-1414 (toll-free) or 804-294-1633, or through the P-EBT Online Inquiry Form.

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
