Glasgow Community Gazette - October 3

Glasgow Community:

Greetings! It was a blessing getting time in my hometown of Louisville, Kentucky this weekend. Time with family, friends and good food is always a win! It was particularly a great time because my son flew home with me and he really enjoyed his time with dad and the grandparents! These are classic memories for us! Also, this past week we had our first Glasgow MS PTA meeting this past Tuesday. We discussed upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, after school clubs and an overview from me of the first month of school. Please see PTA Meeting recording, new PTA website and email address: glasgowpta.va@gmail.com

As FCPS recently shared, if students are paused or quarantined due to COVID, they can and should continue to access instruction and learning opportunities.  At Glasgow, teachers have been given explicit step-by-step instructions on how to communicate with students/parents who are paused.  In short, when teachers learn of a student’s absence, they will notify the student through Schoology to let them know how they can access a recorded lesson in Schoology as well as the assignments students should complete while absent.  Additionally, teachers will be available for office hours or email to answer questions or provide other support for students.  As always, we encourage any student or family with questions to reach out to teachers for help.

During the past week or so our students have been engaged in Fall VGA Reading and Math Assessments. This data will be helpful to guide our differentiation, scaffolding and intervention groups moving forward. It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the first quarter!  We could not have made it this far without your support.  This week it was great to get a visit from our Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ivey and our district representative Dr. Anderson. As always, please continue to let me know if you would like to have a home visit from the principal. Thank you for your partnership and encouragement as we work together to ensure that students have a successful year! We continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and appreciate the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired our students to achieve success!

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

Important Information

AVID Field Trip Chaperones: Hello Glasgow parents and guardians! One of the goals of the Strategies for Success and AVID courses at Glasgow MS is to expose students to the opportunities available to them for their future. For this reason, our classes will be attending a College campus visit based on their grade level. Both the University of Maryland and George Mason University have graciously allowed our students to tour the campus and learn about the university’s academic programs, athletic programs, campus life, and more. This is sure to be an extraordinary experience for our students to learn about post-secondary education!

Glasgow will be taking these field trips on a few different day with different groups of students. Therefore, we are looking for any parent volunteers who would be willing to come along on the field trip with us as chaperones. If you are interested in volunteering as a chaperone, please email Kelly Greenshields at kagreenshiel@fcps.edu. Field trips are an invaluable learning opportunity for students and we hope you will be able to join us!
